I don't understand all these restrictions that clubs place on juniors.

On the course, surely if they are good enough then they're old enough. Ridiculous if a junior has to be a single figure golfer to play in a comp against 28 handicapped adults.

In the clubhouse its frankly weird if you are restricting access, unless you want to protect them from the local paedophile ring who meet in the bar on a Tuesday, but if this is case you need to ask questions about the membership.
It’s more the fact I’m updating our rules, they are old and way behind the times:
1 example being: Juniors must stand aside and allow male and female full playing members to play through!

The Clubhouse is a Licensed Premise, we therefore need to also protect the Club around this law.

All person’s involved in the coaching of children or the JLO or Welfare Officer now have to be suitably qualified, ie attend a Safeguarding Children Course and be DBS vetted.

It’s only once you get involved with the Junior Section at a Golf Club you find out about these things.

These are all laid down by England Golf and Clubs have no choice.

It’s not just to protect the children, it’s also to protect the members and the Club.

The restrictions on on-course activities vary from Club to Club as you’ve seen above, sometimes it’s difficult to bring members in to the 21st Century.

It's great you're bringing things up to date Paul, I was just surprised at some of the other comments regarding club policies that harked back to the Victorian era!

A lot of clubs that have rules are mainly members clubs - at these clubs members pay a lot of money where as junior pay significantly less fees and also especially in the summer are able to get on tbe course a lot so when it comes to the weekend a lot of members have that day as their only day they can play so it doesn’t go down well if they see juniors playing in comps or social play , it’s a thinking that’s been around a while.

To be honest it’ll have to be a balance, as they pay a membership fee I’d like to think I can get them virtually full access and will be restricted as per other members via BRS.
The old “they are the future of the club” does tend to work well at times. ;)

Former club had a restriction in place about which holes juniors could play unaccompanied by an adult, purely because 6 of the 18 holes were on the other side of a 60mph dual carriageway. No other reason than their safety, we had adults volunteer as crossing Marshalls during big junior events.
