Random Irritations

As every year, the clamber to celebrate St Patrick's Day from people who mostly aren't even Irish or had one Irish relative 4 generations ago. While St George's Day is decidedly quieter - not to mention St David's and St Andrew's days which are not even mentioned. The whole thing just feels like a marketing triumph by Guinness these days.
Actually, it's getting a bit of a dead duck, pubs are empty, unless in the cities.

Think St Andrews day gets some attention in Scotland same with St David’s Day in Wales

St George’s - well unfortunately I think it’s hard because some use it as an excuse to go beyond patriotism
No no no. Do not get at people who actually want celebrate our national saints day. I think it's great that some still have a bit of patriotic pride still in them. Mine up and left years ago, and I was a big fan of saying I was English. But no more. I just want to leave the country and watch from afar as it goes under

Well Guinness probably costs about £11.50 a pint nowadays doesn't it? That'll kill the magic somewhat.
That reminds me of a time I went into my local a few years ago on Paddy's day and said what the heck I'll have a pint of Guinness. The lad behind the bar said "no you won't". This went back a forward for a bit till he relented and said..." Ok then" and poured me a pint. Then looked in the eye and said "that's SIX POUNDS FIFTY" "WHAT!"? "Told you" he said.

Quote from a health professional:

Meningitis does not spread super easily. Sitting next to someone on a bus is not considered a risk, for example. It normally requires very close contact involving the exchange of saliva - such as kissing or sharing drinks or vapes.
As the kids sing along to the tune of tragedy by the Bee Gees
tragedy, coughs and sneezes spread diseases tragedy 🫣

Random irritation - prices increases due to “ rise in fuel / energy costs “ - apparently this effects everything from manufacturing of raw material, transportation cost of said raw material, energy to run manufacturing machines, costs to transport manufactured end product.

I get that…..but……. Why is there rarely a reduction when energy / fuel prices drop back to level? I recall a few years back diesel got to £1.75 p/l ish and a company had an 13% increase, fuel went back to around £1.40 p/l yet the prices were never reduced. Diesel now back to £1.60 p/l and along comes a 15% increase. the latest peak in fuel is not as high as previous peaks. In effect it should have been a 13% increase, 10% reduction once stable and now a 10% temporary increase with a potential 8% decrease once prices return to normal.

I know diesel isn’t the only energy cost but is used as a measure, it boils my piss!

I’m very proud to be English, I just don’t need to wave a flag or celebrate it on one particular day.

Needs updating for the vape sharing as that appears to be the source of the outbreak.
There’s a good read up on it on the BBC. It mentions about previous outbreaks, the last being in a Nursery. This one is supposed to be based a round a Nightclub but
Quote,

How is it spread?

Infections that cause meningitis can be spread through sneezing, coughing and kissing.
Some people can carry bacteria in their nose or throat without getting sick, but can spread it to others. The infection can also be spread by someone with meningitis, although this is less common.
Most cases happen individually, but outbreaks sometimes occur in schools or where people share living spaces, like university halls.

I suppose with changing lifestyles which now include vapes, people have to be more aware of the implications of sharing. 👍

So basically it is your fault.
Why would you leave your wallet were your wife could find it so easily?

Just saving you a conversation later mate 🤣
Oh it’s absolutely my fault for leaving it out where she could use it to pay for her petrol!

Oh and I got the “don’t moan at me it’s not my fault your work had a go at you for losing your ID”. 😒

Might be worth reading what I said

Too many take it beyond patriotism and into nationalism

I used to go to the golf club for a St George’s Day dinner. The room was decorated with the flag, bunting & roses. For me, not to do so would be like Christmas without a tree.

I think there’s a time and place for it.

Dunno I find grown men flying a flag for any reason in the name of being patriotic absolutely cringe worthy
What really matters is the motivation behind the 'show of patriotism' - whether that be by an individual or otherwise. And in respect of an individual flying a flag - the context is just as important as the motivation. As much as I have pride in seeing the Saltire flown - I myself would not wave one except perhaps in specific (mostly sporting) contexts
