Random Irritations

My kid school yet again! So despite the previous irritation of parents paying so much for trip to New York without good notice. They’ve decided next year there will be another trip but giving ample time to pay for it.

They’ve decided next trip will be to Peru! Cost per child is £3.5k, now don’t get me wrong the proposed itinerary looks superb but it’s ridiculous to think parents can afford that when there is so many other expenses to be paid out for. It’s a state school and they’ve decide that’ll do a teams meeting in a weeks time to go through it all but deposit of £500 per child must be paid immediately after the call!!

@Lucifer MorningStar my kids school offered one trip per year of this type, I think when they were 17 or so. World Challenge was the company running it.

Similar price but they made a big deal of the kids fund raising to get the money. They would give suggestions, support etc. Some parents would just pay the money but they made a thing of the fund raising being part of the experience.

Just an alternative view 🤷🏻

I genuinely wouldn’t mind that at all if it was like yours is. However my kids school do it for every single school year ages 11-17, I’ve got 3 kids in that age range at that school so if we said yes to each one it’d be around £8–10k a year in school trip costs! The school then do nothing for fund raising or helping the kids find ways to put towards it.

That’s why it irritates me so much. There are 3 trips currently that my kids are eligible for (1 each different locations) if we agreed to it our outlay between Jan-Jul for trips alone would be £7691, that’s not including paying towards the Peru trip 😳

I just wouldn't trust the teaching staff with my kids in such countries.

My daughter is a teacher, so no offence to teachers, but no chance of such a trip from me.

Youngest is 32, so not it relates to my grandkids.

I'd rather pay for them to bring a friend and come with us.

Agreed I’d rather take them myself so that no now where they are at all times and know the hotel and area is safe.

There's been a few holes repaired near the golf club in the last couple of weeks...they're already crumbling and with the frost tonight..they'll explode
After I posted about this I saw the road men turn up to fix them.....they did one hole. Guessing they had one hole on the worksheet and they're not allowed to deviate from it. But seems stupid when I can see Australia through the ones next to the one they fixed.

Ridiculous.

The expectations and lack of awareness schools have around parents winds me up. Holding meetings/parents ‘evenings’ in mid afternoon is one minor gripe that highlights it. But school trips take it to the next level. We’ve picked up our 13 year old tonight from a skiing trip to Italy. She’s had an amazing time and I’m chuffed she’s experienced it.

However, she’s also going to France in June with school. Total cost for both trips is circa £4k. Why they’re running two such trips in the same year is beyond me and seems overkill. We only have one child and can luckily afford. But others are not as fortunate and it adds pressure as naturally, some kids will want to go. There are twins in our daughter’s friend group. £8k if they were going on both trips. Mental.

I’m offended, well not really, please tell us why.

Sorry, but why you are funding both trips is beyond me.
They only run trips if there are enough people to make it viable.
Just say no!

Edit…
What’s wrong with a meeting during the day? Teachers never get paid overtime so any meeting in the evening is in their time for nothing.
Same as caring for your kids 24/7 on a trip. Never given a penny extra.

No offence to the profession. As I mentioned, my daughter is a teacher and an excellent one.

Just something I wouldn’t, based on my own school days (a long time ago) and the locations mentioned.

Teachers are not holiday chaperones. A day trip to an educational venue, perhaps.

Some teachers are well experienced in taking kids on international trips. I’ve been to Paris and Berlin with groups. Paris was unsavoury in places (the metro mainly).

Some.

That probably reinforces my point.

Having responsibility of my kids during school time is one thing. In another country, airports, subways etc is another.

My daughter spent her summer holiday a couple of years ago teaching in Thailand. She worked non stop, funded most of it herself, but enjoyed doing what she does best - teaching.

She has her eyes on Africa currently and I really worry. And she’s thirty odd.

Eh? What a weird perspective. The trips would be running with or without my daughter. And I wouldn’t want to see her miss out on experiences if it’s something she wants to do and we can afford. We’re not going to go skiing on a family holiday for example, as we seek the sun.

What would be much better is if the school published a list of trips they’re intending on running over 3-5 years and parents would be able to discuss with the children in plenty of time and then pick/plan which are most appealing/affordable etc. However, they don’t. They announce they are doing these trips, then usually provide a relatively small window to confirm if your child wants to go or not.
