Random Irritations

Heathrow airport bar.
I know, but.....
You expect a slight fleece but...
£7.95 a pint, but......
£15.90 for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc!!
"Come on, we're on holiday" mode destroyed by a bluddy receipt before you've boarded.
Same the world over, got ripped off leaving Perth last September and again in leaving Bangkok, went without in Singapore as it was a joke.

No new posts in Rules Section for a while. I do like the discussions - surely it can’t all be going swimmingly out there?

I occasionally enjoy watching the physicist Prof Brian Cox - an engaging, entertaining take on subjects that I know little about. Yesterday,a video emerged on the subject of a comet, Atkas 3i. It was selling the idea that the comet might be an alien visitor. After a short while, it was clear that it was the creation of some manipulator of AI. The voice was perfect, the coordination with gestures and mannerisms less so. The tautology also gave the game away.
Nevertheless, the experience was a bit unnerving. How much of this is going on? Do platforms have a system for identifying this stuff and taking it down?

People trying to compare the price of beer (other alcoholic drinks are available) across the country (and Europe) without taking into account the wages and cost of living in each area. Percentage wise, the cost of drinks will be very similar.
Very true. Had a look and found on wiki a map of average gross monthly wages. Clearly showing the correlation you mention.
Except beer prices in the UK do seem high compared with our average wage.

Interestingly we have a lower average wage than all our nearest neighbours. And if you took out the south east, the rest of the UK would be even lower.

Scandinavian countries, including Denmark, have built their strong economies with high taxation rates for several decades.
And that is where you will find high standards of living as well.

Luxembourg and Switzerland are special cases, it seems to me.

Two weeks out of the office, and of course, I've been turfed out of my desk and told to sit somewhere else. Don't know why I bother going in if they don't want me there.

The problem is with a pint in the Uk is this.

Components of beer tax in the UK
  • Alcohol Duty: This is a tax on alcoholic drinks that is calculated based on the alcohol by volume (ABV) and the type of drink. For a standard 5% ABV pint, the duty can be around £0.54.
  • VAT: Value Added Tax is a 20% tax that is applied to the price of the beer plus the duty.
  • Other taxes: On top of alcohol duty and VAT, other taxes such as business rates, corporation tax, and employment tax also contribute to the final price, especially in pubs.
  • The more a pub charges for a pint, the more VAT it charges.
  • Five taxes on a pint 😳

You forgot share dividends and exec wages for the larger businesses - that money has to come from somewhere.

I thought this was about beer prices at the airport ?
Joking aside and doing me
Best to get this topic back online. Why is beer so expensive at an airport. Should it not be duty free. Like all other “ cheap” 🤬 duty free things.

Same as Petrol.!

A pint can cost less than 2 Euros in this European capital city. Cheaper than Prague. I've not been to this country. Looks nice though.

Europe is a great place over all. Maybe we should think about linking our economy to theirs in some way?
Goodness…what an idea…why has nobody thought that before. Or maybe they did…🤷‍♂️

Ah well…
