Random Irritations

A Major road into town has been closed for a couple of weeks, effectively doubling the amount of traffic on another route. Due to reopen on Monday
That route now has Gas works on it for the next week....
The schools are back tomorrow.
Mayhem...utter mayhem followed by carnage.....I'm staying at home.....pity the Mrs and The Boy who have to fight their way to work...
And if you're in Aylesbury..don't call an ambulance between 7 and 10....it'll take that long to get there.....
Pure genius...........

roadworks at junctions with signals that r 3 or 4-way. Last week near Wembley, got stuck in a 4 way signal.. I think it took me 30 mins to get past… queues in every direction. Today 3 way in Windsor.. .. and one of the ways was just an empty village road..
Did the roadworks need to be done?

no idea... but i am seeing roadworks everywhere at the moment... i guess all the workers are back from summer hols and have timed it coincide with school run. There is one 100 yards from my place. its all cone-ed up and signals. Havent seen anyone working there yet. Did not kow that that patch needed anything done

Thats because they work at night, overtime;)

I do like using a proper butcher rather than Tesco, so expensive though. Costs must be huge to cover the prices.
You can’t get a really good steak from any supermarket imo.
Barnsley has got a good meat market & you can pick good steaks up from there.
But there’s a farm shop near me & their steaks are unreal.
Pricey tho.

Good butchers on high streets are hard to find around here. There are excellent ones in most farm shops (and there are quite a few in the area) and they seem to do very well.

We have a few farm shops with restaurants in the area & they’re raking it in.
Cannon hall farm (which features on a Channel 5 show) have cracked it.
You can pay to walk around the farm, indoor & outdoor kids play area, cafe, restaurant.
Absolute gold mine.
They don’t have to worry about the price of wheat.

It might go against the popular view but Tesco Finest fillet steaks are amazing. Better than many I've had from the butcher or farm shop.

They were £7.95 a year ago and now nearly £12!

Can the kids pick which one they want to eat?
😀

I bought a thick fillet steak iin Sainsburys a few years back and paid a fair whack for it. Instructions were 2mins each side to sear it and then edges all around. Then 9mins in oven.
I thought "Who cooks a steak at that price for that length of time?".
I said to my wife "Keep the receipt. I'm following the instructions and I'll demand a refund if it's over done".
It was mouth watering - perfectly pink and tender in the middle - and we've followed that procedure ever since - but it has to be a thick steak.

Don't eat steak since we came back .
We reared our own "beefs" in NZ , home killed and hung for 28 days ,absolutely gorgeous.
Closest you'll get in this country will be farm shops and if you can find one with their own herd even better.
Yes it's a premium price but you pays your money and makes your choice .
Vast majority of beef will be sold at auction, market dictates the price the farmer receives , as with all farm commodities farmers only get what the market will pay ,they don't set the price.

I recently had Wagyu beef in an expensive restaurant in Edinburgh to see if it was as good as it’s portrayed, it was expensive, when the waiter asked if I enjoyed it I told him it was good but I was expecting better.
I had 80% Wagyu and 20% Scottish beef. He recommended the 100% Waygu next time, I won’t be trying that.

A few days before I brought a fillet steak from Tesco and cooked it myself and it tasted better.

Try getting a refund for a late arrival. I booked 1st class Manchester to Doncaster - don’t bother, you’ll be lucky to get a seat. But after the very late arrival, it was running late so they announced it wouldn’t be stopping at Doncaster, and anyone wanting Doncaster should get off at Sheffield and get on the following train…

I put in for a refund with Trans-Pennine. After 2 weeks I got an email saying you didn’t book through us them, we’d bought the ticket at a machine at Piccadilly station. I contacted whoever it was that own the ticket machines… sorry, you’ve timed out for a refund…
That’s bonkers, the GWR delay repay is excellent, all done online and paid promptly, they were helpful the one time I had an issue with a rocket number.

How do you cook yours?

Mine gets seared to lock in the juices and comes out the pan rare. Cooking time is less than 10 minutes. Mrs H’s gets hers left in the pan for around 3 weeks and must come out black.

I’ll add that I’d pretty much given up on getting a good steak in the U.K., especially in restaurants. I’ve never had a bad steak here in Spain, whether in a restaurant or home cooked.

I really enjoy going into Juan the butchers. He asks how you’re going to cook it and what you’re going to have with it. He has, on occasion, suggested different cuts, and sometimes asks have you tried. If he feels that all he has left is not the best quality, he’ll tell you and will say he’s planning on mincing it. We went in there between Christmas & New Year to get a lamb joint. He advised that it wasn’t the best lamb he’d seen and was probably better served in a curry.
