Random Irritations

Two shocks.
1) No photographic evidence offered 😁
2) A place called The Hand & Flowers has a Maitre D!!🤣🤣

It’s a Tom Kerridge 2 star Michelin Restaurant

That's a fair point. What about A Roads which are the most dangerous in the country?
I suspect most of those collisions are caused by drivers who don't understand or ignore the basics of driving.
If the limit is 60mph it doesn't mean it's safe and legal to do it all the time. A lot of folks have passed their test at 17 or 18, promptly forget most of what they've learned and never refresh their knowledge.
How many remember that it's a basic requirement to be able to stop within the distance they can see to be clear? Double it if the road is narrow.
If you're "legally" doing 60 around a gentle bend and are faced with a car doing 60 towards you but there's a hazard on your side and you can't stop in time then 60 was too fast.
We've all been there: horses, cyclists, walkers, broken down vehicles, other drivers turning into or out of side roads or driveways.
Fortunately, we mostly get away with slamming the brakes on and ABS saving the day. But not always.

Not being preachy; I didn't buy a 300bhp Golf R because I like driving slowly. It's just about picking your moments and managing the risk to other citizens.

Somone at work was trying to tell me it's too difficult to drive at 20 rather than 30
I actually agree with that. 😂 I'll feel like I'm driving at walking pace, like as slow as I can go, then glance at the speedometer and it's on 23 or 24. It feels insanely slow. Especially if you've recently come off a motorway, it's like you're not even moving.

It's not hard to drive at 20 though, sure it feel very slow but it's no harder to maintain than any other speed.

And that's the problem...it feels slow.
So it's harder to stick to 20 without constantly checking your speedo.
Which takes your eyes off the road more frequently, even if only for a second.
And that can be enough in an area that they need you to be more vigilant.
Not saying 20 zones are bad but they're not the whole answer..

Many cars have speed limiters. It's just perception anyway. Just as easy to creep over 30 as 20.

Drive 70mph on an empty motorway and you don’t feel you are driving slowly…and it’s dead easy to do so. When the motorway is busy 70mph can feel almost like I’m driving at a snails pace. Perception is all…and it’s not reality. I’m thinking that when I drive a countryside road with no streetlights at night I can drive at 20mph and it doesn’t feel slow.

No, it's not at all. We're all very used to driving at 30, so that feels normal. Usually when I'm driving around on these roads I notice I'm naturally around 29-30 without thinking about it. But as Imurg said, when you're in a 20 zone you have to constantly check that you're under it, otherwise you'll be doing 25. Granted 25 is still less than 30, so maybe that means they have the desired effect, I don't know.

Same old excuse everyone trots out. See how it works out when you get a speeding ticket for doing 25 in a 20 limit. Wales has a blanket 20 limit which I agree is overkill , but also get used to there being more 20 zones in England.

Come on mate, don't be so naive. Everything costs serious money nowadays. Around my neck of the woods they've put in loads of solar pannelled live speed signs which are very pricey and serve no purpose.

I'd also argue the huge holes and defects in many roads with 40+ speed limits will cause far more loss of life than the 20mph zones save.
I seriously doubt that. Got any stats to back it up or is it just your gut feeling?

All the newer residential developments and the town centre where I live have been 20mph for years. Long before they did it in Wales.
A generation of drivers in my area have never known any different.

We just had a letter about turning our estate into a 20 zone. Fine with me.

I'm on quite a big estate. It has a ring road going around the outside, 1/2 mile if you turn left, the same if you turn right. It's a 70's estate so the road is wide, there are big grass verges, good visibility. There is a 1st school, infants, on my side and outside there it has been a 20 zone for quite a few years. About a year ago 20mph signs went up around the whole estate. I've never known of an accident or even a close escape in my time there, 17 years. The reality is that people keep to the 20 outside the school, drive at 25-30 elsewhere, as they always did previously. You have to take people with you and people there don't see the need for 20 limits. The police don't come on the estate, bigger fish to fry, and so it will continue as it is. I can see the need in some places, not so much in others. Having it as a blanket decision seems excessive imo.

cycling up a steep section of off road on my gravel bike, which was quite rocky. Getting overtaken at pace by a group of mountain bikers, i do hope they were on E bikes:confused:

It feels slow, but the biggest issue is that the majority of drivers fail to adhere to it, driving right up the backsides of those who do. The pressure on law abiding drivers not to stick to the limit can be something else.

It doesn’t bother me, but I can see why some would feel hurried by it.
