Random Irritations

I'm off to Spain for a week today. I find I get irrationally anxious about foreign travel now, mainly the airport experience. Not safety fears, just the potential for delays, queues etc. It takes the gloss off the day before and the day of travel. That's irritating 😒

Safe journey Neil. We’re looking to visit the U.K. once the school holidays are over but have the same irrational fear of airport delays, and concerns about public transport once we‘re in the U.K. We’ve given up on car hire in the U.K. when the prices for a basic small car is close on £900 for 2 weeks, and then add in fuel.

Next door neighbour has just come back from a 3 week visit to his folks in Ghana......
Got home Friday morning and I've mot seen them yet....he messaged me to say they were fine, just getting over the strain of the journey back here...
I'd need another holiday afterwards.....

We’re exactly the same having returned from the US yesterday. Overnight flight into Heathrow was delayed over an hour, then what should have been a two hour drive home became over three in horrendous driving conditions.

I can’t sleep on planes so got home yesterday lunchtime having been up over 24 hours. Feel like death warmed up today after a three week holiday!

Not sure who you’re flying with but we’ve flown with Jet2 for our last 4 visits to Europe and they’ve been first class, especially with the kids.

Sadly Ryanair, and yes the flight is late 😪. I love Jet2, so good to fly with, but they have either reduced their flights from Newcastle or bundled them up to package holidays in the main rather than flights only.

I'm sure that this doesn't help matters.

If you are flying with Ryanair it’s a safe bet to lower your expectations. I will do my upmost to avoid using them now. I’d rather pay a bit more and increase the chances of a decent flight.

As with much in life. I now take the view of trying not to worry about things I cannot control.

When flying, we just sit in the lounge chilling out until almost everyone else has boarded amusing ourselves at the people desperate to get in the queue as if it will somehow speed up the process.

If delayed, grab another drink and carry on reading. Getting stressed about it won’t change the situation.

My dear old dad would be fast asleep before the plane took off.

Me? No chance, awake the whole way. Even when we went to Australia.

I had a golf mate who was just the same. As soon as he sat down he’d be asleep, and woke when the plane touched down.

I pre-book exit seats as I’m tall. The problem with those on long haul flights is that, the tray and entertainment screen being folded into the armrest, that armrest will not lift up. I had an entire row to myself on Friday night and would love to have lifted the armrest to make myself comfortable. As it was, I had loads of legroom but in a really narrow seat so what I gained on one hand I lost on the other.

I too can be asleep before take off. Mrs H doesn’t bother to wake me now when the trolley comes round, she just gets me a bottle of water to sip as we’re descending.

When I flew to the Ascension islands with the RAF, I played in the command championships during the day, (36 holes carrying (came 2nd...loser)) then went to Brize Norton from W-S-M had 4 pints in the departure lounge and was asleep before we took off.

I didn't say this was rational thought 😄.

I can rationalise it and there is no issue at one level. Doesn't change the reality though 🤷🏻‍♂️

People who think the internet isn’t a valuable resource for information just because they lack the critical thinking required to separate good information from poor.
