Random Irritations

We live in a new build and have to pay a management company an annual fee/service charge. It’s a massive con and the vast majority of the money goes unsurprisingly on management fees. So already very annoying. Received a letter today saying I am being sent an invoice for a ‘balancing charge’ due to pre-action legal fees spent due to debtors on the estate. So… I’m apparently being charged for others not paying. It’s only a small amount but it has peed me right off!

The HSBC app. It's become a bloated resource hog that takes ages to start up on my phone.
Admittedly it's a fairly low end phone, but it works just fine.
App developers need to understand that not everyone upgrades to the latest and greatest iPhone/Samsung/whatever every couple of years.

No problem - I'll just do my banking on the laptop instead.
Except that in order to log in to online banking via their website, you have to generate a one-time code - using the phone app. Aaarrgh!!!

To be fair it's not just the lower end phones, all banking apps take ages on a lot of even top end phones. Mainly security reasons .. they need to do that handshake with the phone and prove it's safe

Halifax is hit and miss on mine..some days it can be super quick other days takes extra time to load

Pixel 9

Happens with most of the banking apps only. All depends how quick they can do the handshake at that moment.
Just timed it and it takes 5 seconds from tapping the First Direct app to looking at my accounts on what was the bottom of the range iPhone 5 years ago.

I'm sorting out the probate for my mil. Should have been done earlier, didn't realise. Anyway just received a letter, yes snail mail, from HMRC advising of another form required 🙄. It's a straightforward will, no IHT but blimey this is hard going. The system definitely needs an update.

Depends how often you go on aswell, I frequently jump between banking apps to transfer amounts to the correct account and if you leave one you have to log back in

Sometimes it's 2 seconds sometimes 20

OK, I haven't timed it, but my gut impression is that HSBC takes about 10 times as long to get going compared to the other two banking apps I have (Barclays & Bank of Scotland).
It's probably only 5 times as long, but it FEELS much worse.

But the primary irritation is that you can't log in to online banking on a laptop without firing up the phone app to generate a security code, so there's no getting away from the delay.

(PS. Phone is a Moto G7 Play)

Could it be an Android thing? Just tried jumping between First Direct app, Tesco Bank app and a browser window with my savings platform logged in for a few minutes and my relatively ancient iPhone kept them all logged in just fine.

Could be that the newer phones are more secure than the old ones. I have Starling (which I use for business banking) and whenever I leave the app I have to reapply my security measures to open it back up. TBH, I would rather it did that but unlocking the app takes seconds for me to do. I'm running a Samsung S24 Ultra .

Surely you would rather the security of your money protected?

Is there a trick to getting SkyGo onto a large screen from an IPad/laptop? I’m struggling trying to do so.
This won't help if you don't have one, but on my PS4 I managed to install SkyGo so it plays on the TV.

Otherwise, I seem to remember donkeys years ago connecting a laptop to my TV via HDMI cable, as it the TV were a monitor, and then you can play SkyGo on there. Bit of faff though.
