Random Irritations

When I lived in Okinawa we would get typhoons every year. Strongest wind 175mph while I was there. Rarely lose electricity and not much of any damage at all and the locals just ignore things until the worst of it hits. They are used to it and build everything tough. Trees are used to it....might lose a branch here and there.

Luckily we are on the south section of the wind today....only low to mid 30mph with gusts to 65 or so. Golf courses are open although Ripon only has the front 9 open (better draining) because of so much rain last night. I don't even remember hearing any rain last night.
Would electricity cables go underground? They must do something to mitigate against the winds.

They might have some underground, but if I remember correctly plenty of pole and wires. Their power/telephone poles are all reinforced concrete though and I assume they got rather serious about making sure the wires were held on rather well. I don't know how old the picture below is, just copied from online.

Those signs I am getting old when most of the letters I get through the post relating to tests or vaccines due to my age.
  • Biennual stool sample analysis
  • Covid and Flu vaccines
  • AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm) check (thankfully clear)
  • Now I have received a letter to say I have an appointment for a Shingles vaccination.
To me, these are things that are given to old people, not me. Then I look in the mirror. Actually looking at the mirror isn't too bad, it's when I look at the old man bringing the bins in and walking the dog on my security camera that I have to look twice to believe that old man is me.

Was meant to visit parents in Barrhead, west of Glasgow today. Met Office currently predicting wind gusts up to 93mph today. Won’t be going anywhere today.

This is for Brodick on Arran.

Jesus Christ, I literally can't even imagine what a 100mph gust of wind feels like. During Darragh we got to about 60 and I thought that was ridiculous enough.

Just renewed my passport. Looked at the new next to the old and thought it was me and my Dad. 🙄
😆

Our thermostatic bath/shower tap has completely stuck on the temperature side - can't budge at all so we're stuck with the same temperature. That means no baths for now as I'd normally run it hotter for that.

I completely align myself with the thinking of those countries, that I consider have more advanced human understanding, that have no death penalty.
And I believe those countries that do have the death penalty are barbaric in their behaviour, and need to catch up with the rest of the world.

Listening to the testimonies of those that survived the Southport attack 😢

How he rots in jail and never sees daylight again
No idea of the answer but how much is estimated that Rudakubana has cost The UK. This includes costs so far through school, trial, judge/ solicitors, people jailed because of the riots, police time, damage to property, cost for jail term, etc etc.

This of course does not include the heartbreak for all the families involved following their losses for which a value cannot be placed. My thoughts are with all the people that have been affected

That’s the costs of having a democratic judicial system in place

There will always be a cost

The costs for the riots etc - will that’s down to the individuals that caused and created those and they are also paying the. Penalty

As an example I believe the cost for the death penalty in California is an extra £10mil a year

Good point. I was just wondering what made them more resilient to strong winds? Chunks of Northumberland go without power whenever it picks up for example, so how does that change?

Believe most of the issues when it comes to power cables in the wind are mainly due to trees failing on the cables or damage to the sub station etc

Seems the posts are pretty stable

All I wanted was an estimate of the cost to The UK, fully aware of judicial system and other points mentioned, death penalty in California is irrelevant to the question.

I'm struggling to understand the point of this question.
