It's funny that some of those who think that there should be flexibility and discretion with the actual laws of the land governing road safety are often seen on the Rules of Golf section of the forum enforcing a hard line approach to the judgement of out of bounds and the naming of provisional balls.

OK, I'm going to do a Bob and duck out of this particular issue (handheld devices in cars).
It's now obvious that rational debate is impossible with some people.
Not sure what you think there is to debate tbh. He got caught and was given the minimum penalty

Masterchef Celeb Xmas specials have been pulled. I think that's the right move. Whilst I don't like seeing the cretin on my TV at the moment I also think it's right the current professional series gets broadcast. It is close to the final and is life changing for the chefs that reach the end stages. Not fair they should suffer.

even in a traffic jam you are required by law to be in full control of his car , what if the car in front suddenly moves whilst he is busy concentrating on his phone and then people behind let him know and he then suddenly leaps forward and could cause issues , people can still hit other cars in traffic jams due to a lack of concentration which includes using a phone
Happened this morning going onto the M62.

You're both still avoiding the question I posed.
Why is there a SPECIFIC offence regarding handheld devices, when the existing "not in proper control" offence already exists and could easily cover it?
And why is it DOUBLE the penalty for this specific offence?
Explain to me why this distinction makes sense. And please: just saying "that's the law, obey it" adds nothing to the debate.
I’ll have a go.

Imo if you have to react to a situation on the road if you have nothing in your hand but are using an infotainment system built in you can just move your hand back to the wheel.

If you have a phone in your hand you have to put it down before you can put your hand back on the wheel.
This might take a second longer but that’s a fair yardage at 70mph.

Traffic jam is different but it’s a blanket ban to stop it at all.
Just a guess I might be wrong but that’s my logic.

With AI and deep fake so good why not just put Graham Norton or similar in where he speaks.
Can’t be that hard and the contestants can still have their day as filmed.

Android auto is also very locked down and designed to be used on the go. It on top of that has voice commands

So for example it reads texts out to you rather than shows you

You can't reply by anything other than voice ..

Phone calls I'll say "call the wife" rather than start looking through the phone

That and it's locked down, it doesn't allow for example videos to be watched, websites to be checked

The BBC apparently investigated him in 2017/18 and he was allowed to continue to work.

Surely anyone with commonsense who had been investigated would take it as a warning and adjust their behaviour moving forward, not take it as a green light to carry on in the same way as before.🤪
Are there any reported instances since then?
