In principle, it's only fair that people with large gardens that generate lots of waste should have to pay the council to take it away. Otherwise everyone's council tax would be a bit higher. Why should those without gardens subsidise those with?
That said, I presume the council compost all that waste and then sell it? So in effect they are charging their residents to acquire the raw materials for a business, which seems like a good wheeze.

I doubt they fully recoup the costs, just offset some. I don't mind mind paying the extra, more convenient than having to go to the tip, which you can still do and not pay the charge.

More commonly it gets incinerated. (Sometimes generating usable heat/power).
Personally, I don't see why one shouldn't pay. After all, you always have the option of not using the service and dealing with the stuff oneself. Or not generating the stuff in the first place.

Isn't free for them to collect either, round our way we still have bin bags (I know) and the green bins go out every other week. A second lorry comes round and collects the green bins , must increase the council's costs

Personally I do not have a green bin.
I used to take it to a friends farm and dump it on the manure pile but sadly he sold the land including the stables to developers. Now it goes to the recycling dump.
I do not have a suitable part of the garden for a compost heap and at times like now I could fill a green bin about 10 times.
I employed a gardener yesterday (half day only) to do the weeding and remove a lot of summer stuff and she filled 4 bins with what came out.
If I was fit enough to do it at the moment pruning all the fruit trees and other bushes would probably fill about another 5
I have a shredder but it only ever got used once when completely removing one large bush - they are hard work when you are doing that much.

We have a brown bin, for garden and food waste. It's emptied weekly, doesn't cost any extra and is part of the recycling drive. I believe the intention was to sell it as compost so it helped balance the books.

Remote control car fire!
Just a word of warning.
Was at my daughters this morning, she was working but son in law was outside with my Mrs pegging washing out.
I was sitting with grandson and grandaughter - all of a sudden I heard a loud crack and a woosh behind me and flames two feet high from the charging remote control car.
I screamed out to son in law and we had to react quickly, he grabbed a wet towel and put over car and managed to get it outside and harms way, i grabbed a hoodie hanging over a radiator next to fire just in time before it went up in flames.
Thankfully the only damage was a burn mark on the dark laminate flooring.
It was frightening how quickly it ignited and burst in to flames!
Thankfully we were in the house at the time, otherwise.........
Especially at the moment they are having a room in the roof half way through the build!
The moral of this story is: never leave the house with these toys left on charge!

Jezz. Have to admit I bought the girls cheap remote control cars with rechargeable batteries off Amazon
I refuse to charge them whenever I'm not about ..
I'm not one for usually worrying about these things but don't trust them

My lad flies RC planes and has a couple and they have LiPo batteries which are the high density ones like in cars etc.
He has a charge safe box that is always in use when they are charging as it’s a serious risk.
