Random Irritations

Lane hoggers on the motorway. People who insist on sitting in Lane 2 of 3 lane motorways, and lane 3 of 4 lane motorways!
Whatever happened to the crackdown on these drivers? If you undertake you're in the wrong, so I have to pull out from Lane 1 to Lane 4, overtake them and then pull back in. You flash them as you overtake but they still carry on regardless. I doubt they ever even bother to look in their mirrors.
If the traffic on the inside lane is moving faster than the traffic in the second lane, you can drive right past. At least, that's how I understand it.

Does the queue have to be stationary?
If not, how slow does it have to be going to qualify as a queue that you can pass on the inside?

It’s very subjective, but I would say in a motorway tailback where traffic is stop start and moving at moderate speed it’s probably acceptable.

Once you’re in free flowing traffic and reaching higher speeds it’s not. I think what the post I quoted was alluding to was that if there is a vehicle to your offside travelling at, say, 60mph then it’s acceptable to pass to its nearside merely because it’s moving more slowly than you are.

That falls within the realms of careless driving, and when I worked on the motorways I vividly recall a CPS prosecutor telling me he would prosecute anyone performing a high speed “undertake” for dangerous driving.

Volkswagon warranty.
Apparently, a product sold as full manufacturers warranty (like the first 3 years of a cars life) is not as sold and wear and tear is given as a reason for a DSG gearbox and driveshaft being turned down for authorisation and the vehicle hasnt even done 100k miles.

Orbit them - On some journeys where I'm in no great rush to get anywhere I'll overtake a middle lane hog, then go back into the inside lane and ease off until they overtake me again, then I'll pull across and overtake them and repeat until they realise and move into the inside lane where they should be.

Record was 4 times. Puerile but it mildly amused me for a while.

I just won’t undertake…too dangerous given the lack of attention so many drivers seem to take when they pull in after passing me…most of the time I feel they haven’t even checked their mirrors before cutting my nose off.

I was taught that after overtaking I don’t pull in until I can see the car I’ve just passed in the middle of my rear windscreen…only then should I indicate to come in.

And so if seriously irritated by a ‘hogger’ I will sometimes tend to do rather like @HeftyHacker. Childish I know but somehow I feel I am making my point - even though I know the driver is likely to be completely oblivious to what’s going on.

When I was still on the tools I could do 40,000 miles a year, including personal miles. With that much time behind the wheel you get to see plenty of questionable driving. Getting frustrated achieves nothing positive, if anything it might lead to a rash decision. In reality, just how much time does a driver lose to one inconsiderate driver? Seconds… even 30 seconds at motorway speeds is half a mile. You can pretty much guarantee you will get by an idiot well within 30 seconds.

Another way to look at is how much will an inconsiderate driver affect your arrival time? Even on a bad journey, which is very rare, does adding 2 minutes to a journey really matter?

Best just to smile ruefully and enjoy your favourite music.

Same here.

Exactly this.

Interesting but a little dangerous?

I agree - but eventually I get fed up sitting behind someone for miles upon miles dawdling along and that in itself presents its own risks. I consider that they might not be paying attention to the traffic around them and do I really want to be sitting behind such a driver, waiting for some random manoeuvre. I can drop back a bit and I do, but not good me having to keep to doing that. I’m not bothered about the time my journey is taking me. After overtaking I’ll pull in when safe, pause a bit while I check inside lane, then pull into that lane. What we are supposed to do.

How so? I'm not talking about razzing past them and slamming on, it's all at motorway speeds.

To be clear I've only ever done this very early morning or late at night when there's barely anyone on the roads except the sole person sat in the middle lane.

To do it during work hours or rush hour would just be (more) idiotic and dangerous I'd agree.

How does sitting behind someone at a safe distance present a risk?

Or are you saying you get so fed up and impatient that you may make an irrational decision that puts you and other road users at risk?

Contacting Tommee Tippee online for a quick question about one of their machines.

"Before we start can you please provide me with your full address and postcode?"
Why?
"This is just for Data Protection and will be used in accordance with our Privacy Policy"

What a load of nonsense. They can't answer a simple question about their machine without knowing my address??

No - I’m thinking the driver in front is not displaying much awareness as he seems oblivious to me behind him and maybe he should pull to the side. But his general lack of awareness presents a risk. I drop back and another car undertakes me, if he can‘t overtake easily, as I’m going too slow.
