Random Irritations

Gary Lineker. AGAIN!!!!. I've got no problem with him tweeting about climate change and the drastic actions that we need to take "for our children" as he put it, but to do so from his summer holiday in Ibiza which I'm assuming he didn't cycle to get there is a touch hypocritical.

Why is it that so many of the "elite" that are preaching to us about climate change are doing so having flown somewhere on a private jet and then had a chauffeur driven 4 x 4 to meet them at the plane and drive them to wherever they're giving their lecture?

Or

Both apply to your post.

Why would I attack the argument when I agree with it. I don't deny climate change and agree that something needs to be done to reduce or reverse it. I'm attacking hypocritical celebrities/famous people, such as Lineker who is happy to fly around the world watching football matches or going on holiday while preaching to the rest of us about the need to reduce our carbon emissions. It was only a couple of weeks ago that he was saying that he wouldn't take private jets any more. Oh well done Gary for giving up something that 99.9% of people have never used.

Do they really?
Colchester FC was not trying to refute the argument or the point of view of Lineker and other members of the ‘elite’, he was merely highlighting the hypocrisy of where and how they make their argument from.

Ad hominem again.

The older Lineker gets, and the more cantankerous I become, the more I dislike him. He has become a very arrogant individual.

Agree.....I am just watching that eco warrior Chris Packham present the series "Earth" on BBC. Can't stand the bloke but the content is interesting and educational.

What I find annoying is that he preaches about ecology and climate change, yet appears in all these exotic locations around the world for a few minutes in each episode, sometimes without a lot of relevance to what he is discussing. For such a vocal campaigner he must have contributed to global warming by flying all around the globe!!
The programme would be pretty tedious if it was a 1-hour slideshow filmed in a studio in Elstree

In context it usually means attacking the person to denounce the argument rather than the argument itself. Which is where I believe TimShady is alluding.

I feel he believes you are attacking the individual.

Could be wrong, of course.
Correct. It’s using the dislike of Lineker to suggest what he’s saying isn’t true.

Except for the one thing that you keep deliberately ignoring. I agree with what Lineker is saying which means that it's not an ad hominem attack as I'm not trying to denounce his argument. But for him to say it while traveling thousands of miles around the world by plane each year to watch football or go on holiday makes him a massive hypocrite.

So, according to the twisted ad hominem theory used by a poster here, if Putin gives a speech supporting world peace and friendship between neighbours and I post on here saying that he is being a bit hypocritical given his recent record then it means I am some sort of warmonger.

Tu quoque is a very specific type of ad hominem.
At what point does it actually cross in to actually being hypocrisy though? Essentially you could claim any measure of levied accusation of hypocrisy is Tu Quoque.

In this instance, it doesn’t seem that Colchester is saying that Lineker’s argument is in any way false or invalid, only that his actions are incongruous and therefore hypocritical.

Written language being what it is, you may very well be reading it differently.

Lineker’s points are valid. His location is inconsequential. Mentioning them implies a link to what he’s saying. If that link wasn’t meant, then I will accept that.
