It's weird though. On days when Man Utd win and Liverpool have another bad result, so many of the golf monthly threads become much quieter. Not sure whyOnly managed to catch highlights of the Players but looked like a good/exciting tournament at a great course, however … The number of forum posts (or lack of) compared to a Major indicates that among the forum at least, this event is nowhere close to deserving the tag of 5th major
How do you define big names? Young, Fitzy and Aberg all played at the Ryder Cup, so there must only be about 3 truly 'big names' in your book??It's weird though. On days when Man Utd win and Liverpool have another bad result, so many of the golf monthly threads become much quieter. Not sure why
Also, the Professional Golf thread is a lot quieter unless one of the biggest names is fighting at the top. Had McIlroy or Scheffler been up there, I reckon there would have been a lot of chat.
True. There probably are only 2 or 3 "big names", and the reason they are is because when they are at the top, they generate huge discussion. And as they are quality golfers, you often get one of them near the top at a big tournament. How do you define big names? Depends how much attention you pay I suppose. Fitzpatrick won a US Open. Young was right in contention for the Open at St Andrews when Smith won it - I would say he's been on most people's radars since then, so three and a half years ago. Hardly an unknown.True. Simply playing a Ryder Cup, or a few, doesn't make you a big name. It might make you well known and elevate you from where you were before. But winning year after year after year is what is needed, or have some other x factor star quality.
Aberg could get there. Very early in his career, if he goes on a winning streak then he could have a great future. Fitzy will never get there. Quality golfer, great professional, but I doubt he has the x factor or that he'll run into Scheffler form.
Young!? I doubt many people were thinking much about him before the tournament began, including his own family. Great performance from him though, fantastic finish to give himself the biggest win of his career
Good points. As to the “star” quality players, they were there, they had their chance. I thought it was a better tournament to watch, there being a tighter leaderboard, always with the thought that Aberg might falter, which he did.Depends how much attention you pay I suppose. I'm simply saying that the likes of Fitzy, Young and Aberg are not close to being in the same league as McIlroy and Scheffler when it comes to star quality. I'm not saying they are not well known, bad golfers or haven't had big successesDepends how much attention you pay I suppose. Fitzpatrick won a US Open.
