Not sure I’m a fan of doubling the number of signature events unless they’re going to change the qualifying criteria and deepening the fields for guys lower down the tour rankings.

There’s already large parts of the season where guys that just got their cards or have lesser playing rights, where they have to sit out for weeks. Greg Chalmers went through on a podcast the card structure and its insightful to how little rights these guys outside the top 50. So far this year there’s been 9 tour events, 1 was cancelled (Sentry), 3 have been signature, leaving just 5 for those not meeting the weirdly complex qualification requirements to earn money and get into event and that’s if they manage to get into those as priority is still given to the higher rankings there meaning that they can effectively ballot a lower guy out just by turning up .
It’s almost a closed shop with the top players getting more money and more points scoring opportunities and keeping the guys trying to get through down. Of course some will get there but it’s making it harder all the time for them.
So I’m really not sure I’m a fan of this new change to double that but then I’d have been happier if they just binned of the FedEx Crap sorry cup completely.
I’d agree that the signature events would only gain from deepening the field. There are currently 3 that do have a cut - if they’re going to add more then they should all be of the larger field with a cut variety.
If they’re double them then does get to the point where everything in the main season is a signature event. Are they that special then; or does it become a case of if everything is special then nothing is special, and “signature event” just become the name for a main season tour event, as opposed to a major or a playoff event or the ‘off-season’ events during the SEP-JAN NFL hiatus.
May not be as much of an issue as we think. If you call an event a “signature” event next year but don’t change the field depth vs how it is currently then it hasn’t made the opportunity issue you describe any worse. That last line has blown my brain. Never thought of it that way, according to my mate Google there was scheduled to be 34 regular season tour events. However that includes Majors, Signature events, and the Flagship Players Championship. If you remove those that takes it down to 18 regular events plus 4 alternate week events so 22 total. If this move goes ahead that reduces the total number of regular tour events to just 14
.
That is nowhere near enough for guys breaking through or outside of the "qualifying criteria" to be competitive across a full seasons money list to maintain rights when everyone else is getting elevated status, earnings and points. So they have to change the criteria or they're not levelling the playing field at all but actually widening the gap and closing up shop for the top boys. As I said before some may break through and get sponsors invites but it doesn't sit right at the moment. Plus like you say with the Signature events and and majors then outnumbering the regular events nothing is special of signature anymore is it! I need a lie down my little brain is fried![]()
Feels like refocusing on the pre 2021 goals - push the KFT up some notches.
On the major markets point, do we think that is inside or outside the US?
As said, a fair bit of wait & see
....
Edit, answer to my question is here..
Surprise mention of the Ryder Cup also!
