Not sure I've ever agreed with Rory this much before. The Players has it's identity as being the best non-Major competition, pretty much. And the PGA has no identity at all, at least when it was the 4th one in the calendar it had the status of being the last shot at winning a major for the year. And he said some sensible things about Scottie too. I think I need to lie down.

To be fair, if he's ever been anything other than respectful of Scottie then I missed it. Same as everyone else, mind - I mean, what else can you say about the guy other than he's currently by far the best, massively impressive, and doesn't seem to have turned into an arrogant wazzock at all, when so many would have in his position.
Anyway there's a more fun debate to be had here. If we take three things as a given:
1) No more than 4 majors as a hard line (Rory's right, as the LPGA found, more majors dilutes the product rather than makes it better)
2) The PGA is a bit pants
3) No matter whether you/we like it or not, money/sponsors/etc dictate that 3 out of 4 majors will be in the USA. Just a fact.
So given all this..... should the PGA be binned off and replaced by The Players as the 4th major???? Or "merged" with the Players so it can save face a bit?

You can’t have a major that’s restricted to just a single tour members

Or just put it back to August make it the last chance at a major which always seems to hold it in higher regard.

As much as the PGA is very much viewed as the worst major, if you binned it off and replaced it with the players, people from our generation would struggle to view it as a major. I just don’t see how you can just decide ‘nah, we’re changing things, this is more important than that now’.
Just accept that it’s the biggest non major tournament and enjoy the fact that everyone would want to win it.
If I’m being totally honest, I only really look forward to the open, the masters and the Ryder cup. These are events where I give my wife advanced warning that those weekends are out of bounds, please don’t book anything in.
Us open, then players and pga are down on the ‘I’ll watch it if I can stay awake’ level but i wouldn’t change my plans to watch them.

The PGA should definitely move back to being the last major in the calendar. In addition they should have it played outside of America every now and then.
Have to disagree about matchplay. The last day in particular can be a massive turn off. Good for those playing, often not good for those watching, although I do accept that the RC does counter that idea.

The Players isn't restricted to PGA Tour members.
Neither the LPGA nor senior majors fit these criteria.

It’s the newest - a lot of times it has a tour feel event because it’s played on a lot of PGAT courses , it doesn’t have the same history as the others
But it’s still a major and the players want to win one

The issue with LPGA majors isn't dilution but that most are designated by the tour rather than becoming elevated organically, they change name with sponsors like an ordinary tour event and some have very little history to justify their elevation.To be fair, if he's ever been anything other than respectful of Scottie then I missed it. The PGA started in 1916.

If we are going to change the line up of Majors, I wouldn't pick The Players. Yes, it's a crucial event for the PGA Tour, but - as many have pointed out - the Majors transcend the different tours (somewhat, depending on which Major one is referring to). But, I would love a shake up of the Major schedule: Keep The Masters, US Open and The Open, and change the PGA Champoinship into a global event that tours the world: Japan, Africa, Australia, Argentina, Germany etc etc. Wouldn't that just be the best? I know it will likely never happen but it would make a great change for the game.

It just doesn't have that much of a unique selling point. The Masters has this whole aura about it, plus the golf course. The Open is obviously the UK one, links course, changeable weather, prestigious. The US Open has the toughest set-ups and possibly the hardest to win. And the PGA is just like a poor man's secondary US Open really. At least when it was August it had the status of being the final major of the year, the last chance for everyone to win one if they hadn't already. Now it has nothing it's just wedged in there in May.
