No we have this on the East Coast too, but I liked to eat the side pastry first just leaving the base and the meat, made it a much neater fit, usually tried to squeeze a few of the chips on their too ... mince pie supper and a buttered roll ?

Don't mind any sort of pastry myself, but those things that come in a obling ceramic dish with pastry (any sort,) plonked on top are not pies. It's a stew dressed up as a pie.

I like a steak pie surprise.
It's actually curried chicken with a puff pastry lid.
And as it's me who makes it, it's neither a pie or a surprise.
I swap the curried chicken for bolognese mince occasionally which is nice too.
