Free to watch Premier league football
sky sports costs a small fortune per year & the bulk of the money is for Premier league football.
Anyone who missed this first time round it is now being re-run for free. Having watched it the referee was definitely right to stop the punishment at the point he did, however whether he should have stopped the fight or given the standing 8 count is much more contentious point. In hindsight I think the standing 8 count would have been correct but with the punishment the Groves had been starting to ship in the previous 2 rounds I can understand it.

Having watched the fight live and having just seen the re-run my opinion has not changed - the fight was stopped prematurely. This was the 1st time Groves was in trouble after dominating Froch all fight. Give Froch his due he was coming back well and possibly had won the 7th and 8th rounds. However, Froch was given the opportunity to fight on when he had been hurt more than Groves ever was, including the heavy knock down in the 1st. Groves was not afforded that opportunity. I'm a Froch fan and have seen him fight a few times but I've never seen him being dealt with in the manner that Groves did. He took a sustained beating. I fear he will never be the same fighter again.
With regards to the standing 8 count, does the fighter not have to either be knocked down or "touch" down?
A ref can call a standing 8 count whenever he feels a boxer is in trouble in order to asses whether he can continue or not. Much like the Froch v Bute fight where the ref gave a 8 count when Bute was in trouble against the ropes then after deeming him unfit to continue called the fight. Groves was in a lot less trouble than Bute was but Bute still was given the benefit of the doubt.
What about the punishment Froch had been taken from round 1 through to 8? Must of watched a different fight to me.
No, I watched the same fight, but the weight of the punches Froch was landing on Groves in the 7th & 8th rounds appeared to be having a much greater effect on Groves than Groves punches had on Froch in the first 6, knockdown excepted. The way Froch snapped Groves head in opposite directions with consecutive punches probably had a big effect on the referee's decision, rightly or wrongly.
