yesterday was playing with some friends and my friends rolled just into the edge of a bunker, being a fun round he just took the ball out of the bunker with his wedge making sure not to mess the bunker and he did so without leaving any sign of it being there. then four men shouted over from about 100 yards saying to rake the bunker my friend walk over and told them to keep there voices down and the bunker did not need raking, they then said they would be giving in a complaint for my partner having a "disrespectful attitude to senior members" (were 17) when we were walking off the next tee box we saw them walk over and check the bunker and they could see it was fine.. regardless they complained when they finished and the club captain was waiting for us in the club house. In the end the men didnt have proof and he just said to be careful but nevertheless the captain will remember us from this incident. anyone have a similar incident where people looked for a complaint and then are to stubborn to be proven wrong?

Sadly this is the attitude that some members have towards the younger members. They seem to forget that the young members are the future of the club.

not many things annoy me. especially in golf i could go out and shoot 150 and wouldn't ne to bothered but this annoys me.
a friend of mine 17 and off 6, was playing in a mens comp two weeks ago with four older men and after they went up for the presentation and something to eat... in the members bar (usually no juniors allowed) but he was only junior in comp. three separate people complained about him being there! and asked him to sit in the normal bar.... outrageous! he played in the comp and was there for the presentation. obviously the others came to his rescue but its just ridiculous

They sound like miserable so and so's to me. Your club sounds a bit uptight too, wouldnt let it bother you though, just carry on enjoying the game, not everyone in golf is like that as I am sure you are aware.

You're not a member of Mitcham GC are you??

As a junior member there and then a colt and then a full member I had to put up with rubbish like this on an almost daily basis. I left in the end.

I've never understood the hatred that some senior golfers have towards junior/young golfers. Is it jealousy? Is it anger that they're young and the senior members aren't? I really don't get.

I've always said that when I'm in my aged years that I'll always try and encourage the juniors/young players/members. Maybe I'll end up all bitter and twisted like the rest..

It's sounding more and more like Mitcham with every post..

This sounds OTT but your friend did provoke it, why didn't he play his bunker shot? I can appreciate that the others may not have seen clearly and thought he'd not raked as it should have been if he'd properly played his shot. I appreciate juniors often get a raw deal but if you're going on the course, play properly, if you ar#e about then what do you expect?

when younger the pro told me to practice from out the rough hitting balls onto the fairway as our practice range was 9 iron distance only.

3 Snr citizens chinned me about it and wouldnt except my explanation. I went back to the clubhouse later to find the 3 off them standing waiting for me with the pro and secretary, they pro said yes he's a member and I said to do it, matter closed.

clubs are full of 'that' moaning type I'm afraid, ignore them and let them fester on something else

just to clear things up in general my club is good to juniors. we have coaching twice a week if we wish to attend and have our comps on saturdays all year round not just in summer time which is unusual at least in the clubs i have friends at. just some people feel that since they pay more they have the right to say and do what they want to juniors. but to be fair in general i have more good experiences than bad on the course and in the clubhouse with senior members

I played nine holes with a junior at our place, he said he had been playing for 18 months and was down to 8. He sais older members often conplained about him and I wondered whether in part it was jealously.

We had an intake of really good juniors at our club 3 or 4 years ago and I always made a point of speaking to them and saying congrats when they did well. Now, some time on, 4 of them have turned pro and moved on to other courses but they all come over and chat when I see them at the local range - it does pay to encourage them!

Something very similar happened to me as a junior. Possibly even more inexplicable because I had played a bunker shot and was raking the bunker. Two old gits gave me a right telling off for no apparent reason.

This was one of the reasons I never took out a full membership until in my forties!

Try not to take it to heart.

You were probably using an illegal grip on the rake, it's your own fault.

Young whippersnappers, keep em in their place I say. Pulling balls out of bunkers!! they will be looting the pro shop next.

Not all Juniors are angels and if some of your fellow juniors are messing about it tends to harden the attitude to the section.

That said I find in general that Juniors have a much better attitude to rules and etiquette than Seniors. The worst offenders are those who have started playing golf from middle age and think that they should 'set an example'. [After reading their Daily Mail]

of course i completely agree its like in anything when a minority (juniors in this case) compared to all the men and women members. a few paint a bad picture in peoples eyes. bad experiences are more easily remebered than good unfortunatly

i doubt you could hit a ball in a bunker, take it out with a wedge and not leave any trace that you were in the bunker. in saying that i couldnt give a monkeys if you did it or not. im more concerned about footprints in my bunkers.

only rolled in about 1 foot and there was not much sand in that particular bunker. there was definitely no mark if there was we would not have made a big deal about the man complaining.
