Organ donation - would you?

I bequeathed my body to medical science and they are contesting the will !!

Seriously, if any parts were of use I'd happily let them have them!

See that's where I'm covered, I'm not sure I'd accept an organ, I probably wouldn't but you can't actually say until faced with the decision I suppose.

Why wouldn't you accept an organ? So if the doctor said you need a kidney, or a lung, or heart transplant or you are going to die, you'd simply refuse it and die?

What about if you had a sibling, or some other family member that was a match for some of your liver. Are you saying you wouldn't donate a piece of you to save their life?

Not sure I really understand that way of thinking at all.

Are you a Jehovah's witness or hold any religious beliefs as to why you wouldn't?

Nah, not a religious thing. I didn't say I wouldn't I said I probably wouldn't but couldn't actually say if I would. I can't really explain it (and don't think I need to tbf) it's just something I've always thought. As I said, I wouldn't really know till faced with that decision but I'm not sure I'd like somebody elses organs inside me, it would be weird I think. Just being honest.

i am on the waiting list for a kidney and have been for 4 years now, there are over 3 thousand alone in the north west waiting so chances are slim, but i do know one chap who has had 3 in 6 years but all failed to come alive, what annoys me is when you pass away EVEN if you have a donor card your family gets to say yes or no and according to my consultant this rules out over 45% of available organs.

Oh I'm not having a go, just trying to understand. I'm fairly certain that most people faced with death or life will hopefully choose life and if that choice means accepting another persons organs then so be it. Thankfully (or hopefully) most of us won't be faced with that decision.

In terms of after death, I couldn't care less what they take. If there really was a beardy fella called God and an after-life (evidence will suggest there isn't btw), how much of a barsteward would he be to not offer it to people who have given up pieces of themselves and their organs to help others live a better life? I mean, I know the guy has got history of being a little bit wrathful, but wow there is no need for him to be like that is there?!

I'm going to buck the trend and say no, no particular reason not to, but I'm hedging my bets and if there is an after life I want all my bits just incase.

I don't know why, but I've never carried a donor card and don't think I will.

Wow, taken along with other recent postings ........:(:(:(:(

Could you explain to me, as an atheist, which version of the afterlife requires intact organs, or indeed even a physical body?

Second, what makes you think you will be going there?

Third, do you have a card refusing a donor organ if one of yours failed?

Fourth, assuming you, like most organ donor skeptics, is a pitiful hypocrite who will change their mind when it suits them, what if the only suitable donor organ was from a Celtic fan?

Strange one about those on waiting lists. Always annoys me when you see those getting that golden opportunity (think George Best) and still squander it by going back. I have a lot of dealing with our renal team at the trust and they say it's saddenly common.

Like I said, I don't know what I would do until faced with it. I don't think I would accept one, but don't know.

1) I know nothing of the afterlife. It was I concede a flippant comment.

2) Who knows? I did say I was hedging my bets.

3) No, didn't know there was one, but see my initial comment on this post.

4) Idiotic question that really doesn't merit a response.

I have always carried a donor card and made sure my family know my wishes. I'm not religious. I fully believe that when you are dead you are not going anywhere other than in the ground or in the fire and it just seems so wrong to throw away what to someone suffering could be the most valuable thing in the world that they could ever be given.

I tried to give blood a while back but they wouldn't accept me as I'd had a tattoo less than a year ago. Seems a bit odd to me if they're that desperate for it but there you go...
I was reading on BBC yesterday about world cup footballers tattoos and apparently the reason Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't have any is because he gives blood regularly.....every credit.

I could tell you a true story which was based on a very similar scenario several years back. Made some people sit up and think as to their previously held attitudes. Still makes me laugh to this day.

When I'm dead and gone they can have whatever they want, until then I'll keep everything for myself. Everyone in my family knows how I feel, and I'm on the donor register.

I can't currently give blood because of medication, but if I could I would.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. They are pretty much as I imagined they would be, majority of people in favour of donating. I used to carry a donor card in my wallet years ago, don't know what happened to it but I really ought to get myself on the register.

Really interesting comment about Ronaldo. I've never been his biggest fan but fair play to the guy, you have to salute him for his actions

Trust me, pal, but after spending a year on dialysis, you would accept one from Neil Lennon.

Ethan, I wasn't trying to be contentious. I just posted my thoughts at the time on this, I said in another post (I think) that I can't really explain why I think that way, I just do.

I really don't see the connection with Celtic fans or popcorn teeth though, unless you were hoping for some sort of negative response on my part?

For what it's worth, in the past I've waded in to help a Celtic fan being laid into by Rangers fans, same with an England fan and Scottish fans and if I had to would do so again...does that put your mind at ease that I'm genuinely not bigoted in any way?
