I like to see a club similar in stature to the others on the Rota..
Obviously a links course with Plenty of history. I'd imagine the big ask is finding a course with the local infrastructure to cope but also one with the necessary course/ Club infrastructure also.. First class Practice facilities and enough area to erect the stands etc.

There are a lot of boxes to be ticked and I'd imagine not many courses capable of ticking them all.

Ive never played it but I'm not quite sure Blackmoor would fit the bill ;)

Their choice. Can't expect to host The Open though - clearly not bothered - and neither am I. Lots of things and places in this world I'm excluded from - I don't lose any sleep over them - just go somewhere else equivalent if I can. If not - then so be it.

Give it a couple of hundred years of global warming and I'm sure Blackmoor will be a lovely links course :D

Western gailles

pppffff

Kinghorn GC, it has a natural amphitheatre to its layout, if I recall it has parking for at least 20 cars, and with at least half a dozen par 3's it'll help keep round times down, and best of all the website says they've just had a new carpet fitted!

What were the crowds like at the Irish Open compared to a typical Open championship? I know the event sold out so clearly numbers were capped.

Agree, best course in GB&I and would be a fantastic challenge.

The 2015 Irish Open had about 100k total over the event including practice and pro-am.

The Open gets a lot more, at St A (if you exclude the Monday numbers), about twice that, other values a bit less. But in addition to the galleries there are loads more reporters, TV crews, club manufacturers and trade people. Newcastle has a couple of decent size hotels, one literally on the first tee and quite a few smaller hotels and B&Bs. Most would stay in Belfast and there is no rail link, so people would have to drive, and the main road isn't a motorway either.

When the Senior British Open was held there (note it is properly called the 'British') in the early 2000s, Arnold Palmer stayed at Turnberry and flew on on a helicopter.

Also, the course has a bit of the St A problem of limited viewing angles on some holes. There is space in the course, a 2nd course which weaves in and out of the big course, but a number of holes only have one viewing side.

I love RCD and would love to see The Open there, but I think it wouldn't cope.

With Royal Portrush on the rota for 2019 the loss of Muirfield isn't that difficult to deal with. Royal Portrush can fill it's place rather than getting a token one off Open.

Re Royal County Down, I was over there in 2000 when the Seniors was played and the traffic was horrendous heading back up towards Belfast after the Sunday's play.

Newcastle itself was a major disappointment.
