Which club(s) do you think are potential replacements?

Some suggestions.......

Archerfield (right next door)
Trump Aberdeen
Castle Stuart
Saunton
Royal Porthcawl
Royal County Down
Kingsbarns

Some of these may have logistical issues (Saunton) but the courses are all good enough.

Any others?

RCD doesn't have the infrastructure. Pity, best course in the British Isles.

I think the R&A should go to a course in the Republic. No rule they have to stay in the UK, is there? Portmarnock would be a good choice, lots of infrastructure and easy travel from the UK.

What were the crowds like at the Irish Open compared to a typical Open championship? I know the event sold out so clearly numbers were capped.

Agree, best course in GB&I and would be a fantastic challenge.

That'd be an interesting decision!

With Portrush being added already they may not choose to replace it?

This.

No need to replace it.

Out of the ones mentioned I'd say the only one which gets a look in would be Kingsbarns, but I'm sure I heard that mentioned a couple of years ago by Peter Dawson of not being "quite there" yet.

It won't lose it IMO but if it did RCD is the only worthy candidate on that list for me.

Surprised you mention Archerfield, it's not in open venue class but If you want links in that area then the candidate has to be the Rennaisance

It already has lost it!

Wow, that would confuse the Americans. They could not call it "British Open" anymore. (Well, I guess they still could ... they tend to be a bit flexible on geography outside of the US anyway :D)

Cant see the R & A having the open at Trump Aberdeen after they said it wouldnt go back to Turnberry after his dodgy comments.

What about having the open at an inland course as opposed to a links?
Gives even more choice

Let's get one down south, we've got a load in merseyside, a load in Scotland and only one in the south (RSG). So Portcrawl, Saunton or even Burnham 😉.

There are enough courses in the UK without going outside of the UK to the RoI. If you do that then why not go anywhere in Europe, Far East etc. No, sorry, the Open is a UK tournament, end of.

Not one of them, they will just go without Muirfield.

Not a problem, most of them think Ireland is in London anyway
