we have a pref lie local rule on our handicap master site which can only be accessed by members - is this sufficient or should they also be posted on the Clubs Notice Boards,

just wondering how those who don`t have the internet (yes there are still some) or are from a visiting team visiting to play a match go on

Well, there is limited point in having local rules at a golf course if they are not accessible to many players.

Mind you, you could directly e-mail many players a set of local rules, or post them on a noticeboard, and they'd never bother reading them.

However, presumably any competition secretary in charge of a competition, whether it be stroke play or match play, would make it clear the key local rules in force, such as preferred lies. Or, it would be possible for any player playing in these competitions to contact that competition secretary (or other club official) to find out. If communication of these local rules really is a problem, then the club officials will soon know about it after continual requests for information, and hopefully find other ways to get the message across.

Thanks for reply - if I am correct - before the latest rules it used to be that Local Rules had to be in the format as examples shown in the Rules book and posted on the Notice Board to be applicable, maybe new rules have changed this.

The rules of golf simply state:

"The Committee needs to make sure that any Local Rules are available for players to see, whether on the scorecard, a separate handout, a notice board or the course's website."

The rules you need when out playing are on the back of the card where I play. Judging by the sort of questions I get asked there are a lot of players who cannot be bothered to read those let alone all the other ones we have in the LR book which you need to now before you commence play.

We do have a set of wooden notice boards next to the first tee giving information about Winter Rules being in operation and which holes we are playing as well as a course information notice board beside the ladies and gents changing room doors.

With the growth of iGolf and the ability to submit General Play rounds for handicap then surely they must be displayed.

Bit like the analogy of a tree falling in a forest - if a local rule isn't displayed does it exit?
