Mobile phone legal or not?

We all know that DMD's are a contentious issue. Regardless of your thoughts on them they are here to stay however the waters have been muddied even further by DMD apps on mobile phones. The R&A clarification with regard to things like compasses has helped but has also opened a floodgate. What we really need to help prevent argument (or maybe cause one) is a list of conforming devices.

The R&A aren't likely to do that any time soon so I have taken it upon myself to begin compiling a list of mobile phones and there status within the current clarified rules regarding DMD's

Where the phone is not legal a reason will be provided.

So far the list is small but will expand.

If you want a phone added then reply below with make and model and I'll try and do the leg work (Google the specs and go through them ;) ) and add it.

If anyone feels I've got the status wrong we can also discuss it here and help us all clarify the status.

The list can be found here and should update as I change it.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wZJ6s0M3258t_wPF_eJJ56RKalPNHcc70trChwduoe4/pub

Maybe if found useful it could be made a sticky?

you will need lists of software too.... so far I've found the 'phone hardware to be the easy bit! Admittedly this is partially because I've previously focused on the hardware :)

When you say software Duncan, you mean the apps?

If you mean DMD apps I can certainly add a list of apps but would need a little help from owners of various systems.

yes I mean the DMD apps themselves, including any add-ons or related apps that could process the GPS data and deliver non-conforming advice.

for example; Golfshot looks fine. However, I'm personally uncertain exactly what the Golfscape add on is doing and it appears to be indicating both the direction of and relative position (up or down) of targets - which makes it a no-no. On the other hand it may not be doing the latter...hard to tell from the manual!

one of the unfortunate byproducts of the general non-conformity of the hardware is that much software has been developed outside the rules (for multi function devices used as a DMD).

hence my point in this thread.

can i user my Nexus tablet? Haven't seen much discussion on these though I assume the rules don't specifically refer to mobile phones but rather refer to mobile devices. Of course my Nexus has Google maps, Google Earth, compass etc and I can download any sort of app/ Also it clearly has an orientation sensor which in some way may well count as something with which you could measure slope. There would be nothing stopping me using Google 'Satellite' (Earth) photographic view and marking my ball position on a hole; marking flag position on the green and getting a distance measurement.

Depends on which Nexus :D but consideration can certainly be given to all multifunction devices.

The technique you describe would proably leave you in slow play territory though. Would also be pretty inefficent although you could download freecaddie and use it on the tablet via GPS (no need for internet except to download the course).

The gyroscopic sensors can be used to measure slop but not as standard. That would require a specific app to do so and having that app would render the device non-compliant only if they are used during the round. There is also apps for reading break on a green, fine to have them but not to use them.

Nexus 10 - Not legal because it has a barometer sensor.

Nexus 7 - Legal

Nexus 4 - Not legal because it has a barometer sensor

Golf scape is augmented reality. It displays information based on the view but distance information is the same as it would be via overhead view. Gimmicky really but can be useful to indicate line on a blind hole for example.

And they tell me this all speeds up play

Quick question - is there an app or phone which can give a "rough guestimate" of distance as opposed to an exact measurement? I'm thinking it would more beneficial to those who don't normally hit clubs to distances of the accuracy a DMD provides. Like most golfers for example.

You would get your rough guestimates from a stroke saver.
