Played today in a club 'Open Linked" comp, medal round, had to draw a player in The Open prior to going out, my score today is added to to his score tomorrow, lowest combined score wins.
Front 9 was pretty good, started bogey, par, double (via the trees), double, par, bogey, par, par, bogey, to turn 7 over and level par. Pretty happy at this point, only missed 2 fairways, got up and down a couple of times and holed a couple of decent putts.
Parred 10, then had a complete brain fart for about 15 minutes.
11 is a tricky par 4, slight dogleg left. Blocked my tee shot into the trees on the right. Got it out, leaving a 6 iron from the rough, which I put in the front right bunker, maybe 30 feet from the front pin.
Thinned my bunker shot into the deep deep clag behind the green. Ouch. Thinned my provisional to the fringe at the back of the green, some 50 feet from the hole. PP had already looked for the first one with no luck, so i decided it probably want worth finding. Duffed the chip, then three putted for a 10. Yes a 10.
Thought i'd got my head straight by the time i teed it up on 12, a straight, tight 390yd par 4, before blocking my drive OOB right. Topped my provisional 50 yards then hit my 4th OOB right. Pulled my 5th into the trees left, chipped out, hit the green then 3 putted for another 10. Yes, another 10. Head fried at this point.
Parred 13 with a good up and down having missed the green right.
Made double on 14, drive ended up right next to a tree and my only shot was to play backwards, before a regulation FiR/GIR par on 15.
Another topped drive/duff/missed green combo on 16 produced another 7. An 8 iron to 6 feet on 17 should have given me a birdie but I lipped the putt, then pulled my drive on 18 into the trees, provisional produced a 7 via the left rough, back of the green and a three putt.
So a back 9 of 54, comfortably my worst 9 hole performance of the year, which included 4 pars, so 19 over for the other 5 holes.
Gross 96, Nett 82.
Incidentally I drew Francesco Molinari in the Open, so he needs to shoot around 48 tomorrow for me to stand a chance I reckon.
Just opened another bottle of rioja, I'm drinking to forget.
