Naming a provisional ball

I don't buy that, especially if you say
''Hang on fellas, I'm going to hit another and it's not a provisional''
Nothing ambiguous, nothing that needs committee approval or an archaic dictionary

You may not buy it but, it is true there is a widespread misunderstanding that the second ball you hit has to be provisional and they don't believe that you can just put a second ball into play even if you declare it is not provisional. (When I say widespread it is probably not a majority , but it is certainly a not insignificant minority)

I imagine that a claim is more likely to happen in team or matchplay where the action of Player A immediately impacts the result for Player B.

Are you aware of it ever being raised in an individual competition?

Although the players were in a team (ie representing their club), they were playing for individual scores. Their score would directly affect their team score and affect the position of other teams/clubs.

It's not my problem if they don't know the rules. If you claim a second ball is not a provisional, you're 100% covered. If they find your first ball and want you to play it, tough. Explain/show them the rule and they've learned something new.

…and I’ll note that without a clear statement of provisional or new ball the problems don’t arise when the first ball is not found or is abandoned. The problems starts on the tee - or wherever the 2nd ball is struck - as soon as it is struck. Because the question immediately arises as to whether or not he has played one or three, and whether or not the first ball is still in play.

I think it means: This is my opinion, don't respond with a counter argument because I will have already left.

But, in reality, they still view subsequent posts within the thread, and respond when temptation gets the better of them. Which is often immediately

P.S. not referring to any individual in particular. Just an observation I've seen many times after someone had declared themselves out

Not me, it's my rule.
Once I've said I'm out I never go back in*, no matter how tempting it is.
Being out means I've said my piece, if the other people want to continue with their circular argument, fine but don't ask me any more questions because I won't answer.
But you are right, I've seen many people declare they're out but continue to argue (post no.146 )

*At least I don't think I have. Please feel free to check back through my 28,000+ post and tell me I'm wrong.

The committee, as always.
However, if the committee needs to be called upon to make a decision, then it's unlikely that the indication was clear - unless, of course, there is someone wrongly insisting that the word provisional must be used.

Like that's going to work well during a rules dispute.

Make the rule simple, just state the word 'provisional'. It really isn't difficult.

Mickey Flanaghan is probably the best person to ask for a description of "out"

It's golf, not a vocabulary test. Telling someone they've been DQ'd for not using the prescribed word (when their intention was indicated perfectly clearly using other words) would be worse.
