Yesterday one of my playing partners had a bit of a mare on a hole and ended up with an 11 - on the first hole in the medal!
His 2nd shot ended up in the trees and his chip out went wrong , hit a tree and ended up about 10 yards behind him in the rubbish. Lots of hacking later he makes it out onto the fairway and completed the hole. After the round he admitted he didn’t think his options through and should have taken an unplayable instead of trying to hack out.
However, his options were limited as line of sight would have taken him miles back, behind trees and it would have taken multiple drops to clear the undergrowth. This left S&D but this would mean his next shot would have been in front of where the ball was, therefore nearer the hole. We are pretty sure this option is not one he could have used but just want some clarity.

This is one where you can use the rules to your advantage. Rule 19.2a/1 covers this exact scenario where the ball lands further from the hole than where the stroke was made. He would have been within the rules to re-take the shot from the original position for one penalty stroke.

I've only once taken S&D where the place I played from was nearer the hole than where the bell ended up - a tee shot which hit a tree and bounced back behind the tee. Trees are lovely things but in golfing terms a pain.

Putting off a green is a common situation where a player’s ball ends up (sometimes much) further from the hole than it started. The player could choose S&D as his option on what to do next…placing his ball back on the green to where it was putted from - all for the cost of just the single ‘penalty’ shot…cute 👍

I did exactly that during a club championship round a few years back. Twice 🥴

The greens had been tricked up to a ridiculous speed and the flag placed just a couple of feet before a big slope leading down to a runoff.

18.1 is one of the easiest rules to remember. You can always take stroke and distance, at any time, no exceptions. End of.

so many players seem to think that your ball has to be in water; ‘lost’; in a penalty area, or otherwise unplayable for S&D to be an option when in fact it’s always an option - and the grumbling and confusion that often arises when S&D finds you closer to the hole than you were before the shot - especially when it finds you plonking it back on the green.👍
