Manufactured McIlroy?

HRC's post is all well and good....the strange thing is that much of what Rory's saying now is the opposite of what he said in the recent documentary about him.

He said then that he got back with Holly because he realised what a big mistake it had been to split up with her - and they were living together at this point so it seemed pretty serious. He said earlier this year that they split first time because it wouldn't have been fair on her if he was going to be away for weeks at a time. Now he ditches her for a tennis player who's also away most of the time. When will they ever get to see each other!?

No one's saying he should 'change his game' for the Open...but surely a player of his calibre should be able to play a variety of different shots? He says he hits the ball high and that's not suited to links play but I bet if he had to hit e.g. a low shot under the branches of a tree on a US course, he would find a way to do it rather than chip out sideways.

In the documentary he categorically said he was committing to Europe and buying a house in Northern Ireland was evidence of that. Now he's "committing himself" to the USA and buying a house there too. Good luck to him - he's perfectly entitled to do that and as pointed out, 22-year-olds have been known to change their minds from time to time - it's just a bit unexpected after his earlier comments. It's not like he's "suddenly" realised that the weather is better over there.

I don't blame him for going to the US - that's where the big money is, after all. I do suspect that his management team have had something to do with at least some of these changes of heart...not that they've told him to do anything particularly, more that they've advised him how to make as much money as possible. Can't blame him for wanting to make a lot of money, although if cash was behind his decision to ditch his live in girlfriend shortly after getting back together with her, that would be a pretty poor way to behave, imho. I guess only Rory knows if that's the case.

Anyway I wonder if he'd let me use his practice facilities, since he's not going to be needing them as much from now on? ;)

good post, he needs better advice from his PR/Management company before he opens his mouth in future

good post muttlee kind of where I was intending this thread to go. Wasn't planned as being an assault on his character it just seems over the past few months he's not been the same Rory but winning a Major was bound to upset the applecart...

I don't think he's done anything wrong although this "relationship" with the tennis player is nothing more than media PR to earn some lucrative dollars and get him some publicity to the non-golfing US public. I assume he's keeping his house in Nortern Ireland too as it's close to his parents but it makes sense to find a permanent US base if that is where he intends to play. Strange that Florida is the choice, and one eye on the LAke Nona/Isleworth fixture per chance. I'm sure Chubby will keep him on a tightish rein and hopefully he'll be able to settle and dominate the US scene next season

I think everybody needs to cut him a bit of slack here.

We seem to be forgetting he's only 22 years old for heavens sake!

Can you imagine what it must be like to have millions in the bank, being brilliant at your chosen sport and being able to do pretty much whatever you wanted? I'm nearly 40 and I know what I'd be like if it was me (it wouldn't be pretty!), never mind when I was 22!

The way he's handled himself on and off the course over the last few years has been impeccable but the sadly the media-led world we live in today is now determined to psycho-analyse every word that he utters or tweets!

Just wondering the influence that McIlroy's closest advisors are having on him. The break up with Holly, the link up with Wozniak, the sudden dislike of links, the preference of US courses, the significant investment in his Northern Ireland home then his decision to move America and then there was the uncharacteristic twitter outburst. Don't get me wrong Rory has a greater chance of winning tournaments stateside but it just seems as though he is being moulded to usurp Tiger, or at least go head to head with him.

He'll draw in US Irish crowds, he is now a major champion 'holding hands' with the world number one tennis player (who is conveniently part of the same management group) it all seems a little artificial to me, especially after watching his documentary. Call me cynical but it's all a little scripted for my liking. What are your thoughts?

You are making far too much of this. Rumours of Rory's break up with Holly predate the US Open, and he has always been a high ball hitter better suited to US type courses. That doesn't mean he can't play links, as a 61 at Royal Portrush will testify. His remarks at The Open were made a few minutes after a frustrating round. Read the full text of what he said, and I don't think you can disagree with him. It is great to hear a player say something beyond the usual bland drivel that most of the US players ooze.

As far as the PGA Tour is concerned, he only needs to add a couple of events to the majors, WGC events and those he already intended to play to make the minimum number needed for membership, and most of the big names already have a home in the US. Darren does, and he isn't a PGA Tour member. Rory still lives in Holywood wil one 'l'.
