Weight training is something I've been considering but I know absolutely nothing about it. Do you go to the gym or have a home set up? I hate gyms BTW 😬

I've just started weight training but fortunately won a 90 days coaching course on Instagram. I know there's a lot of misinformation but there's loads of coaches and plans on there to give you a workout plan. I know a lot of people don't like gyms but apart from the odd gym bro the other people there are doing it for the same reason as you probably. I enjoy going. Just get my head down and get my workout done.

Weight training is a must, this has been the turning point for me, I did weights for 3 years when I started offshore 2007, and was in great shape, then son number 1 came along and I just let myself go completely 😂😂
Did a lot of running in 2018/19 but ended up skinny fat.
Already after starting weight training properly again I’m feeling much better.
Every session for me will incorporate, Squats, Deadlifts, Chest Press or Shoulder Press depending on what’s on my program.
Looking forward to hearing your progress 😀👍🏻

I can’t do squats due to the shot knee, so until the strength is up and the weight is down that’s off the table.

I’m with a pt Saturday who’s main skill is rehab especially acl injuries although when the misses booked it and told her I have no acl she said it wasn’t possible so she’s going to have her work cut out 😂. Our gym package comes with either 8 or 12 weekly reviews included so post Christmas I’ll have more of an update.

Health eating is crap though.

Losing weight is not rocket science, in fact it is extremely simple.

1] Eat less
2] Exercise more.
3] Watch the magic happen.

Not necessarily true. My wife has a health issue and her body holds onto fat. She is on her feet all day 20,000 steps , walks to and from work aswell. Eats a light breakfast, light lunch then an evening meal (nothing major)

She could eat salad every meal and would still not drop weight easily

Gets her down sometimes

Chatting about weight loss in work a fella said he knew an old horse trainer who used the phrase, "less bucket, more road" when he was getting the horses in shape.

I like it. Simple yet effective. Haha

Sometimes it helps to have motivation and a plan behind strength training.

Fit for golf has basic strength training programs centred around golf which are pretty easy to follow. Some use weights at the gym some use dumbells or bands that you can do at home. I think they are pretty well thought out . You can subscribe to the app or just give it a 1 week try for free.

It may well be simple but I don't think that makes it easy Hunger mechanisms and satiety signals mean that eating less for most people over a sustained period of time is pretty difficult.

This covers the nuts and bolts of it, but it’s also about balanced macro’s too which is harder than it sounds
Don't know if there is any evidence that 'Balanced macros' make any difference to weight loss.
Sounds like pseudoscientific jargon. People have lost weight on all sorts of restrictive diets and failed on all sorts of 'balanced diets'

And put it back on again as soon as they have finished.

It’s very simply calories consumed v calories used.

The other stuff is good for health and fitness. But losing weight is very straightforward if not very easy.

You can’t outrun a bad diet.

I think worrying about balancing macros is overkill when trying to lose weight.

No one is thinking about balancing macros when they are putting it on.

I'll say it again for those at the back.

Less bucket, more road. :)

Some do some don't is there evidence that carefully 'balancing macros' makes a difference. I have a reasonably good biomedical background but when I decided to lose weight I wouldn't have known what a balanced macro was.

Why I agree to a level whoever certain foods contain empty calories and this will effect a long term diet solely for weight loss. If the diet has low protein it can be destructive as it will not allow the muscles to rebuild after exercise which relates to muscle wastage. It’s easier and quicker to lose fat than gain muscle so getting the macro balance right will see better long term results. Currently running less on carbs but more on protein to make up the calorie gap.

Less bucket, more road. :)

It’s not balancing the macros along with more bucket and less road that causes the weight, the balance of the macros (ie sugars and certain fats etc) that will speed up how much fat you put on and how quickly.

Polyunsaturated, monounsaturated & trans fat seem to be the big no no with a recommended intake of 0grams.

It’s ironic that I had cous cous with feta yesterday for lunch based solely on calories only to find out it’s a big no no!

A big part of my journey is also about food education and what I should and shouldn’t have.

My comment was aimed at every sort of 'diet'. Cutting out various things, be it meat, bread, sweets, alcohol or whatever, and counting macros, points, calories, etc will work for a time if done correctly but the best way that i have found (study sample size - me and the Mrs) is to change lifestyle. We both enjoy cooking and eating good food so anything too restrictive was never going to work. We cut down on portion size, introduced more veggie meals during the week so now we have at least 1 fish and 2 veggie meals each week. Less red meat (but better quality - farm shop not supermarket) and it is something we have been able to maintain for a couple of years - and counting.

The wheels fell off last night , during the day I played golf (31points) so i'd worked up an appetite, I phoned the good lady to say I'm in my way home and as told that she had a craving for KFC. Well who am I to refuse a lady , a ten piece bucket was purchased and demolished in quick time . I'm feeling very guilty now ☹️
I always feel like I'm fine to have a takeaway on golf days, as I'm usually starving after golf, and lots of sources will tell you you burn around 1000 calories over 18 holes. Don't know if that's gospel truth or not.

As was discussed a page or two back, not drinking is a saving grace for me these days. I used to go out and have a skinful every weekend, but that slowed right down as I got into my 30s, and then we had Covid lockdowns where I stopped drinking almost completely. Nowadays the only drink I have is two shandies after my round of golf, and maybe go 'out out' for drinks only once every several months.
