My brother and his wife just did the keto diet for a couple of weeks (no carbs). The fat just falls off. However, the downside is that it made them feel absolutely miserable. My sister in law started to get brain fog and felt really vague and weird. She had to eat some normal food before an important meeting, otherwise fear of messing it up. I suppose it is a bit like a marathon runner hitting the wall when they run out of carbs for quick fuel, you just never have that easy access to energy for everyday activities.

Personally, I'm starting to go out of the office at lunch time for a 5K jog. Usually a light jog keeping my heart rate below a certain level, sometimes a bit more of an interval session. Just mix it up a bit, make it less boring and work aerobic and anaerobic systems. Do cardio tennis lessons for an hour on a Friday lunch time. Try and eat healthier mid week, and allow to myself a treat or two at the weekend. And, got my golf as usual on a Sat and Sun, which is a good 10K walk each time.

I'll start doing my weigh ins, see if it pays off over the long term. Did it once before, but mainly focused on improving running speed in organised events, which worked wonders (along with the weight loss). This time, I'm not focused on improving running speed really, I just don't want to have to bin all my trousers and have to by new ones with a 36 waist.

My comment was aimed at every sort of 'diet'. Cutting out various things, be it meat, bread, sweets, alcohol or whatever, and counting macros, points, calories, etc will work for a time if done correctly but the best way that i have found (study sample size - me and the Mrs) is to change lifestyle. We both enjoy cooking and eating good food so anything too restrictive was never going to work. We cut down on portion size, introduced more veggie meals during the week so now we have at least 1 fish and 2 veggie meals each week. Less red meat (but better quality - farm shop not supermarket) and it is something we have been able to maintain for a couple of years - and counting.

We hardly m eat unhealthy but portion sizes and snacks have always been the issue. Snacks have all but gone, some ingredients are out (last night swapped rice out for cauliflower rice) and think tonight is courgette noodles instead of pasta.

I’ve used to do a meat free month every year and the difference in feeling was amazing, unfortunately a huge iron / protein drop meant I was always ill for around a week after. I’d have not know this in the past until I’ve gone back and looked at the marcros for that month.

Why I agree to a level whoever certain foods contain empty calories and this will effect a long term diet solely for weight loss. If the diet has low protein it can be destructive as it will not allow the muscles to rebuild after exercise which relates to muscle wastage. It’s easier and quicker to lose fat than gain muscle so getting the macro balance right will see better long term results. Currently running less on carbs but more on protein to make up the calorie gap.

It’s not balancing the macros along with more bucket and less road that causes the weight, the balance of the macros (ie sugars and certain fats etc) that will speed up how much fat you put on and how quickly.

Polyunsaturated, monounsaturated & trans fat seem to be the big no no with a recommended intake of 0grams.

It’s ironic that I had cous cous with feta yesterday for lunch based solely on calories only to find out it’s a big no no!

A big part of my journey is also about food education and what I should and shouldn’t have.
I'm not criticising what works for you and good luck to you , my point is that for weight loss you do not need to think about the macros you can do it how you want if your calorie output is more than your input.

One thing I've been told is too eat your food slowly, this way your body has time too tell you it's full. Thus meaning you can stop eating
Doesn't work for me. If the food is nice enough then not being hungry is not a reason for me to stop eating it. I stop eating it when there's none left.

Truthfully, early on, the water just falls off. Less carbs, less water retention. In the end it's just another way of reducing calories and can help individuals feel fuller, longer.

What is the difference between keto and just plain old Atkins?

Not a clue. Never followed any sort of structured diet plan myself.

I did ask them the same question actually, and I think the answer was they are pretty similar.

So basically they took a working proven diet , called it a new name and made some money

Wish I could make money that easy!

Mainly Keto starts and remains very low carb. Atkins increases the carbs throught the phases of the diet.

Then we have Paleo...

All much the same really. Reduce carbs. Not a bad idea as so much processed food is carb heavy. Simple carbs at that.
