Losing weight/fitness thread

I've been "rucking" for a while now as I hate running, I have a 10kg weight in a backpack I bought with a compartment at the rear for the weight plate.
It's good fun and definitely makes the walk more strenuous, I believe it benefits your core and overall strength as well 👍

Did the backpack suffer from excess wear and tear or did it cope ok ?
I've 'borrowed' my wifes waterproof thing which seemed ok this morning after i spent time adjusting straps etc but worried i'll knacker it before i return it (although it does seem pretty heavy duty

What kind of weight did you add? I took a couple of hand weights which seems to fit in nicely

Last time it was close to 20kg (about 40lbs) & it rained one day. So i figure if i start with half that and do the 5km non stop it'll be a good foundation (after all you generally don't walk more than 300 yrds with a tour bag before stopping for a couple of minutes)
Luckily plenty water stations round the course so only carrying 1-2kg of that at any time. The 'killer' bit was going up banks/steep slopes so I'll need to factor that into morning walk route too
I did read something recently about stopping and starting requiring more energy. Especially if you will be putting down the heavy bag and picking it up again. I can't find the report that I read but Google finds me a similar article in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/science...nergy-than-continuous-walking-scientists-show

I bought a backpack just for rucking however the quality is amazing and I use it all the time for general stuff. Think it was a 5.11 Tactical Rush, quite expensive but top quality.
For the plate I just bought a cheap thing from Amazon...

I'm certain that picking up the golf bag goes against all manual handling advice. The first bit of advice on any manual handling course is " If you don't have to lift it, don't. Use machinery if possible" so surely caddies should just use a trolley ;) The way we/caddies pick the bag up one handed and then twist round isn't doing the back any good, and when carrying, the weight isn't evenly balanced. Makes we wonder how the top caddies can do it for so many years.

Yeah that weight looks much more suitable than these (although they do stack on top of each other quite well without moving)

How do you manage 210g of protein a day??
A proper scientist reckons that people need about 0.8g of protein per kg to function normally :
(There's a transcript in the link, as well as the podcast).
We eat about double that as part of a normal balanced diet.
As a general point of interest, the zoe podcasts are a useful and well researched insight into food and nutrition. As a caveat, they do plug their own gut screening service, but I think that the scientific research is legit.

Regarding the complicated relationship between society, weight loss and food, the BBC posed a few questions:
I think there's a lot to be said for the idea that our current food environment is inherently harmful and exists mainly to benefit food manufacturers.
There's the interesting idea that, in the absence of any legislative efforts, the only thing that might help is that if enough people are on weight loss drugs, the demand will dry up and the processed food pushers will just die off. Interesting.

I've read this thread pretty much all the way through, yes it's all about intake and exercise, but it's all been walking and weights.
If you want all round exercise and fitness go SWIMMING.

Food for the next 6/7 days, will jump into Lidl’s for a couple of Steaks and Gruyère Cheese as well.

Hope you are adding a bit of fruit and veg - even for a veg phobe like me it looks a bit lacking in colour
For context, I have Blueberries / Blackberries / Strawberries / Raspberries with the Greek yogurt, normally 80g.
Normally 1 Banana a day and sometimes add a Pink Lady into the mix!
I buy Frozen veg normally (Spinach / Mixed Veg), accept for Tender stem Broccoli and Asparagus, which I buy fresh.

Not wrong with swimming, but the best exercise is the one you enjoy doing.
I'm sticking with golf, though I go to the gym and walk the dog a bit, I used to enjoy swimming but it's a bit boring and difficult to find a quiet lane.

Raining this morning so forced myself onto the manual step machine with the weighted backpack on, jeez that was 4 times as tough as regular walking but no doubt useful for conditioning for the banks/slopes I mentioned yesterday

Boring as hell though staring into the same space for 50 minutes

We have a ski erg machine (think upright rowing machine) now in the gym and it is great. It isn’t a machine you just get on and do 30-40 minutes straight but more suited for intervals. Last night, me and the Mrs did 2 minutes ski whilst the other did 2 minutes on the bike , resting the arms but still working. Did 5 sets of each, good for first time through and left us both puffing. Will keep doing it, building up the timing

Got a 10k charity run tomorrow morning and I’ve done very little training 😬
At least I’ll lose a few more ounces 🤣
That reminds me of something that my daughter told me

She did the Kilimanjaro walk.
There was one girl who had done absolutely no training for it, that girl did not get very far before giving up.
