Local range closes

The best of our two local ranges, with a 9 hole course, closed today when, I understand, the receivers were called in at 10am. It's a great shame for the area and more so the people who work there who, I believe, are now redundant.

I just hope that a way will be found to re open it with new owners, that the golf course members havnt lost too much money and the employees will be re hired or find alternative work. In the meanwhile there will be less practicing for us all.

Where's that?

Ashford Kent

Chris, didn't you say you wanted something to do after retiring.... This seems right up your street

If they couldn't make it pay Baz I don't think I could! And there would be the small matter of buying it from the receiver. I reckon it will sell to the likes of Pentland Golf who own quite a few courses in Kent.

Hopefully if they buy it they'll keep it in better nick than their range at Etchinghill.

Don't know if pentland has any spare cash, Austin lodge must be a big millstone round their neck.

I don't think there's a lack of money, as the parent company has land banks and is building houses, they might starve the golf side but I doubt it

I am another member of Homelands who just found out today, website and facebook not showing anything yet. Sadly it seems to have happened on the quiet. Lorries today taking away buggies and equipment. Does that get arranged in 24 hours??? Fees have only gone up by about £10 a year recently so maybe they should have gone up a little more. Really hope Pentland take it on but a staff member told me today that they think the land is going back to the land owner. Surely a good deal to be had here with a fully built 9 hole course. Normally this course whilst short is very good.

The other two local courses are either not very good or extremely expensive and not very friendly so a very sad day as I used to play Homelands 2-3 times a week every week, until just recently.

Maybe the members should all badger Pentland!!

The fact is that golf is having a very tough time. Green fees are down, practising on ranges is down, People don't have spare cash like they used to.

Golf is just been chucked through the discounters and devaluing a very good product.

It shows how tough it is when you can get a game at Celtic Manor on the twenty ten course stop over and play the montgomerie the next day for peanuts. Everyone is fighting for a very small amount of business.

I believe it's around £130 for that package, that's not peanuts for many people...

Plenty of ranges locally. Lavender Park has a 9 hole beginners course attached and seems to be ticking over nicely. There is a range at Blue Mountain but I guess that will go now planning permission is going through to build on that course. The other is attached to the Downshire and is a 60/60 facility and just upgraded mats and balls. There is also a range in Maidenhead (twenty minutes from my house) tucked off a dual carriageway which is stand alone but seems to be ticking along nicely and has been run by the same guy for over twenty years so he must be making a living.

The point is, there is a large number of facilities and surely only a finite number of users but they all seem to be making enough of a profit to be operational and have upgrade balls and mats

I mentioned it to one of the pros at Etchinghill and he dashed off to let his management know, I'd be surprised if they didnt look at it.

Downside is that, I understand that now Crosby is back in charge at the football club he intends to put in for planning on their part of the site. Now if the application is for a hotel and sports facilities, a golf course could be a great asset, but if housing I'm sure that the land owner would be wanting to go that way too

I can't speak for the other 9 hole courses but Ashford Golf Club is very friendly and a decent course, don't listen to those who say otherwise, it's not as cheap as homelands but is a great full length par 71.

The main Ashford 18 hole course is quite a good course, love the tight 13th. Quite expensive in comparison to Homelands but i suspect not to dissimilar to other full 18 hole courses. Have to disagree whilst i was a member there for 2-3 years several years ago i found the management not so interested in the needs of the younger generation 20's and 30's. I had to have an interview to join where the main question appeared to be did i think jeans were appropriate on the course golf. I did find the members just like other courses the vast majority are friendly and welcoming. I'd certainly go back if fees were lower, and no joining fee. Prefer it to have a range rather than a practice fairway, but can't see where they would build one.

If i ran a local course i might be inclined to offer cheap membership to ex Homeland members to try and recruit new members!!!
