The thing I find most strange about Rory's comment is not that it may or may not be meant as a dig, but that he finds the move to 72 holes peculiar.
Whilst you don't need to have a 72 hole tournament to be eligible for ranking points, it is accepted that the number of rounds is a factor in the ranking points. That is to say for an equal strength of field a 72 hole tournament will provide more ranking points than a 54 hole one. Given this and that ranking points is likely to be key in LIVs viability and ability to attract new players it seems perfectly logical and the opposite of peculiar.
