LIV Golf

The thing I find most strange about Rory's comment is not that it may or may not be meant as a dig, but that he finds the move to 72 holes peculiar.

Whilst you don't need to have a 72 hole tournament to be eligible for ranking points, it is accepted that the number of rounds is a factor in the ranking points. That is to say for an equal strength of field a 72 hole tournament will provide more ranking points than a 54 hole one. Given this and that ranking points is likely to be key in LIVs viability and ability to attract new players it seems perfectly logical and the opposite of peculiar.

Don’t think it’s about profit right now but more about it being sustainable, they are throwing money at sports though to try and enhance Saudi for them to be a holiday destination in the same way Dubai etc is - they want to look beyond being sustained by oil

It's kinda wacky though. Pretty much the only money they have is from oil, and means it's actually money from the UK (and others)

So liv is not really funded by Saudi or any other middle Eastern entity or acronym, its funded by UK public (and others)

I find it funny people think it’s unsustainable, this was discussed on a podcast recently and PIF last year accounted for $913billion in profit and available cash flow.

If people think the money will dry up they’re way off.

The PGA Tour has a very healthy cash flow…. BUT is operating at a loss. Like LIV it currently has the money to do that but who do you think has the deeper pockets?

Whilst both of them can service their debts, it’s almost a non-argument but who will be sustainable in the long term? That is a question none of us can answer. There are so many questions you could ask of either side but beyond that there’s the unknowns, e.g. how long will oil last, who brings in more sponsors, has the sponsors reached saturation. To be honest, there’s probably pages and pages of what if’s.

All we do know at present is both sides are strong, and both sides look like they’ll still be here in 3-5 years time…

It’s prob a combination of sportswashing and Saudi believing that the world won’t always rely on oil but all their grand plans for tourism have already been downgraded significantly in regards what they are building

They will always have cultural issues that will restrict any tourism impact

Their sports ventures run at huge losses -planned World Cup will potentially be one of the biggest financial losses in any sport event and there will be zero legacy

The PGAT is now also owned by people that will want to see profits produced quickly. As long as LIV is around, and is a competitor to the PGAT, that profitability is damaged.

One has complete freedom to evolve to find sustainability, whereas the other is confined by definition of what formats professional golf should adhere to.

Most loss making big businesses still pay out dividends & bonuses. And sponsors don’t get their profit from the tour.

As to your second point, both tours have shown their flexibility. Whether it’s tweaking the FedEx or paying out swing bonuses to players, saying the PGA is constrained by formats doesn’t mean it can’t tweak the tour.

Sadly, not many Olympics leave much of a legacy. Pretty sure the Qatar World Cup left no legacy. The idea of a legacy is largely a marketing pipe dream.

Yeah, the PGAT can tweak, but LIV have a lot more freedom to move their product.

If I had to back a tour based in the US, versus a tour that can move around the world to grow dynamically - I'd choose the latter.

Yet the sports biggest market by a considerable margin is in the US

Any tour that’s based in the US
and corners that market has a far stronger base for success as has been proven

Here’s an off the cuff thought. Do a quick search on how many golf clubs there are around New Delhi & Mumbai ‘v’ clubs around San Fran & L.A. Which area has the greater market? Which population has the greater disposable income? Which country has the greater mobility?

Taking either tour to a desert isn’t growing the game. Don’t get me wrong, I want both to succeed.

Qatar World Cup as with the upcoming Saudi one all about brown envelopes and sports washing under the guise of growing the game - at least a good number of Olympic venues still get used in some countries

Whilst technically you’re right. I’d argue in the modern world there is no legacy to any major sporting event beyond the final of the tournament itself. People in general just don’t care beyond the here and now in many cases, which in itself is sad.

Also those continually used Venues could be argued that the largest majority were already in use venues before the events and just got a bit of an uplift so they gave just continued as they were before the Olympic games or worlds cups etc. it’s a sad reality but one I think society has become used to and is the norm. The Middle East countries that’s a different story.

Henni Zuel leaves Sky Sports for the Liv Broadcast Team...

She will be a great addition as it does need strengthening in my opinion.
Arlo White could go and I wouldnt be that bothered.
Feherty and Foltz are great, I would like to see her as an on course reporter as that needs to be better.
