Had not read where Shambles is saying the merger has to go ahead, must be awful to have to eat that much crow, but being the hypocrite that he is he will handle it well. Not a coincidence playing with the head of Liv Golf.
Like I have said before the PGAT tours merger U Turn has now given the green light for the corporate world to engage with Liv around sponsorship's whereas before they would have been wary because of all the early negative press.
Lee Westwood in London Press Conference
"I see Liv getting stronger and stronger from what I have been told by people who actually know rather than speculation from people who dont know all the facts"
The Liv side of things seem very at ease with this whole merger situation rather than the turmoil on the PGAT players side where their leadership has handled the whole situation very badly from the start and then blindsided them with probably the biggest hypocritical u turn in professional sport and threw a good few of their top players under the bus.
It seems to be coming apparent that the PGAT realised their designated events model wasnt sustainable so then they would have been forced to lower the purses again in order to stay in business as a non profit entity.
Why did they rush through designated events ? - Simple to give their top players more money and stop them from considering moving to Liv and it worked.
However a back down to lower purses again would have actioned some top players going to Liv which would have meant keeping the current PGAT sponsors happy harder, even at the lower purses.
So before that very weak position down the road came to fruition they went for this merger as quickly as possible so their position was as strong as it could be from a bargaining position.
I suppose based on that theory if the merger didnt happen Liv's path is easier to attract sponsors because thanks to the PGAT trying to do golf business with the PIF, the stigma has gone.
Liv would start approaching top players with significant signing on bonuses again but there will be a lot less loyalty to the PGAT now after the PGA Tours actions.
Maybe thats why the likes of Brandel Chamblee who has been one of the harshest critics on the Liv/PIF is now saying that the PGAT cant afford for the merger not to happen ?
