Just had a great lesson!

Its always the later holes that I play my best. Last weekend I scored 6-6-4-6-5-4-3-5-4 then 6-6-4-6-5-4-3-4-4, not to bad and reckon the first and tenth could easily be pars and drop the hcp down to the teens.

we all get them. Usually i play a cracking drive, better approach, duff a chip on, then send it over the back, manage to get on a nd 3 put. by the time youve finished your looking at 8. Card wreckers!

My problem is i rush my shots and dont think about them. See some one behind me and think damn are we holding up, i better hurry, suger a duffed it, now need to change clubs, no wait that will take longer al just use this one, doh its gone too far....

your not alone. The above is me too.

The other scenario is that I play passable golf and then have a nightmare 10. From that point in I know it's unlikely i'm going to make those shots back.

It can be so demoralising by I try not to let it get to me too much. Difficult though sometimes when youve spent the previous 5 holes working hard to claim a couple back from the course.

If I could just focus on trying to play to a notional 28 and cut myself some slack rather than try and flag the irons (and fail) with every fairway shot- i'm sure it would improve.

No matter how bad it gets, by the time ive got home i'm already bouncing back and keen to get back out and do better. Ive never known another sport that can do that for me. Guess that's the golf bug.

Usually get off the tee Ok and not bad once on the green, it's the bit in the middle!

I know the feeling. The driver is working fine, the short game is OK and the putting is not bad but the long irons and fairway woods are still an issue with too many duff shots. For some reason I think I lose my tempo too easily and end up rushing my shot and trying to hit the skin off the ball.

My GIR figure is something awful (25% according to Strokesaver2) which puts too much pressure on my short game.

I think the thing to remember is that rushed thoughts lead to rushed deeds. I have a set routine where I take my glove off between shots and put it on after I have pulled the club from the bag. I always clean and put a club back in my bag after playing a shot and so even if I have topped it 10 yards I'll stop, select a club, and putting my glove on acts as a trigger to my brain to focus on the shot.

You don't need to feel rushed on the course. If you and your partners are playing that badly that it is obvious you have lost your place ont he course let the group through. If however as I expect, it is slow due the pace of the course as a whole forget about those behind. It is YOUR game and it is important you get the most from it.

If you have a pre-shot routine stick to it no matter what happens to the ball. If the group become impatient and start firing report them straight to the committee. You cannot play good repetitive golf shots if you are charging around like Dwain Chambers on a banned substance

I don't hit enough greens mostly (sometimes I do), but for me I'm more interested in getting the ball greenside and having a chance at par (with an up n down) than getting stressed over my second shots. Often on the long holes I can't even reach, so progressing the ball is my no.1 priority. If I'm not feeling confident, I club up and try to relax concentrating on a nice clean strike even if the accuracy is off. If you are playing at Roundhay (?) i.i.r.c. the priority is conservative driving....take the 9th as an example (I know you played it well recently), such a tight line through the trees......I played 5 wood, wedge the second time round......having learned my lesson!!!

Well if last nights lesson was great, todays 6 holes after work was poor.

I rushed up to the golf club after work to sneak my first twilight holes of the year in. It may have been me rushing but i was shocking...... for every nice shot i hit 5 bad ones followed.

Disgruntled by this i bought a token for the range and went over last nights lesson in my head. Hey presto, For every bad shot I hit on the range, about 7 good ones followed.

So before i play tomorrow i'm going over the range!
