I Am Terrible In The Wind And I'm Sick Of It

Might sound counterintuitive but rather than try and smash through the wind, take 2-3 clubs more and hit a 3/4 shot. More of a bunt really.

Obviously you can’t take 3-4 clubs more than a driver. Again, it’s a 3/4 shot bunted down the fairway. Because you’re not hitting it hard, there’s less spin on it. As a result, it’s less likely to balloon up nor go sideways.

The one other tip I was given was to play everything to the back edge yardage. If it’s 150 middle, 170 back, play as a 170.

Crossfield talks about hitting this type of shot. I'm a big fan of it too.

We have SI 1 on the 15th with OB all the way down the right. At this stage in the round the last thing I want to be doing is hitting 3 off the tee.
Il quite often hit what you would call a bunt drive down here. Very little power in it. Kinda shoulder to shoulder with the hands. Keeps it low and running with little spin.
It leaves a long approach but keeps me in the game.

Our 16th is like that OOB left and if you go too far right blocked by large trees. I get a shot SI3 and I can't reach unless it is bone dry and I hit driver with roll. Best thing is to simply hit a bunt, a proper Crossfield fairway finder, knock it down and hope to pitch and putt. A 5 and move on is always a good result

I've never tried hitting a three-quarter swing with driver. Might be worth a go but I'd have to practice it first I think. I don't generally play three-quarter shots with any club because I'm not very good at them! And with my much-documented backswing troubles, what I think is a three-quarter is basically a full swing anyway. 🤦‍♂️ I'd have to think of it as a half-swing.

On the second point, I've been playing all back-of-green yardages the last few weeks after a tip video I saw saying that. I have actually gone through the back of a few par 3s though which was annoying and unexpected. I think it's because I changed golf balls, plus it got warmer, so my yardages were longer than I thought.

The nearest thing I've got on video is this shot i played a few years ago on our 10th.

SI 5. Comes just at the turn. A risk reward par 4. 365 yards off the yellows. Water left. Ob right. Decision time.
If I'm going well I may lay up. If I'm going poorly I might take driver and push.
If my driving is going well I might push.
Depends very much on the wind and course conditions to what shot I will play and how my round is going.

This shot was a little bunt with the hybrid. Nothing to it. I'm in play. Got a shot to the green and kept it safe. Nothing fancy.

Technique.
Tips on playing in the wind seem to be about technique.
This has to practiced an learned. Keeping the ball flight low against the wind and in crosswind.
This can be made more difficult to do if your club-heads and shafts are designed to assist high ball flight.

The range is your friend. It won’t take long to practice it, maybe 15-20 balls. Don’t hit at the ball, hit(swing) through it as though it isn’t there.

It's counter intuitive but the above comments about swinging easy are spot on. Playing in the NE of England I play a lot in the wind yet still hit it quite high. Not ideal but it is what it is. The key though is to fight the urge to swing harder and hit smoother. It really does work. Keep saying in your head on the downswing, 'swing slow, swing slow'. I imagine I'm swinging like Montgomery, slow and easy. I won't do it every time, the urge to swing harder just takes over, but it certainly makes a difference.

I was swinging all over the place this morning for first 4 holes.. had 4 points through 4

Told myself slow down, swing easy (was windy) rest of round I played to handicap and finished on 32 points

Windy out there today. Front flag on one of our par 3's, normally a 6 iron. Absolutely pured a 4 iron and just got it a couple of feet past the hole. Loverly jubbly.
