After struggling with my wedges for the last month I decided to have another lesson tonight as i've got a long weekend of golf coming up.

My pro got me to hit a few shots with my 8iron and it would appear i was making the same fatal error with all my irons, it was just made to look orse with my wedges as i was aiming at a smaller target (the green rather, than the whole fairway).

Anyway, i was basically locking my right leg straight at the top of my backswing, thus having to chop right down on the ball meaning no loft and more often than not a violent slice.

As soon as he pointed this out, i slowed it down and hit literally 40 balls pretty much out the button.

I just wish i could have my pro follow me round everytime. Anyway here's to a glorious weekend of golf!

How great is that feeling?

A lesson with a pro who spots a flaw in your game. With his advice you get an almost instant improvement which ups your game.

Glad things have improved minty, hope the weekend's a resounding success mate.

There has been a general consensus on here that a few quid spent on a lesson rather than trying to self cure is a small sacrifice to get the ball coming out of the middle of the club.

Your post confirms that opinion. Great news and I hope you burn it up at the weekend

thanks basher, i hope it is too.

It amazes me how a pro can spot a flaw, cure it almost instantly and leave you feeling like you could take on any golfer in the world. ok thats going a tad far but you get the picture.

Its just a case or remembering the lesson, practising at the range again tomorrow, then taking it out on the course with me thursday.

SPOT ON!

One other thing that pains me is people saying " i cant hit the club, i'll buy a new one" when in fact for a fraction of the price they could have a lesson and get just as good if not better results.

Sometimes a new club just helps you feel abit better though i have to say that.

Definately well worth the time and money to have some professional lessons. Just getting back into the game after 5 years away and so am having lessons but intend to have a regular check up with the pro once I get going.

Yeh, once I got to grips with the wind.....into and from the left.....just about the worst for practice.
I saw you hit some good 'uns as well, just not with my G5 ....u got some clean hits/good flight with your short irons.

My short irons are my strongest part of my game, because i enjoy it. So i practice it alot. It becomes a little to easy on the range to land a pw where ya want, shame it aint the same on the course.

must be the night for lessons.
mine had me standing with a ball under the right heel, trying to get me to unlock my right leg.
when I changed it for a smaller stone it started to work and make sense - but it's going to be a b****r walking like that :D

Mine is booked in for the weekend. Want to check that I am still applying all of the changes suggested last time and get my pro to have a look at my swing etc on my fairway woods as they are not going great.

For once I have not got a round lined up for the weekend so ideal chance to have a lesson and hit the range and the putting green.

Going to see my pro at the weekend to discuss where we go. Having had a lesson with him a fortnight ago I'm going to use my home pro in favour of my original teacher who has moved some 30 miles away.

I want a lesson on the short game (around the green), approach shots from less than 70 yards, and one on short iron (8 through to PW). Once we've done that I want to see where my game is and maybe discuss a programme specifically designed for my swing (i.e. not change it too drastically) and to try and get me down to 10 by the end of September

Got my lesson coming Thursday and a game on Saturday - we'll see how it turns out. It's taken him all this year to get me into having a half decent swing - but it's quite nice when he tells you "there's not much else I can teach you for now - you just need to practice it". Ok, I know it's only the end of step 1 and there's step 2,3,4........ to come - but still. Short game lessons next. Here's to handicap (nominal) falling. 26 now and target 18 by year end. Is that too ambitious?

A tad ambitous maybe. I'm off 27 now and my target is to get under 25 by the end of the year.

Maybe its me being too cautious and i should set my targets higher?

I dont think its to ambitious. With enough hard work and practice, dedication to the changes, there is no reason why you cant knock 5 to 10 shots off in a year. Will be a tough slog though.

Minty, I think you could get down at least 5 shots. A large % of shots played by higher cappers are the wrong shot. I have seen guys try to flop a shot onto a green with nothing in their way to merit it. There was a great article in last months (April edition .. wait a mo, thats this month ... oh bugger I am confused ;) ) and the fella talked about CONTROLING THE CONTROLABLES and I think if you focus on the things you do and not the bad bounces or bare lies then you will perform better and more importantly calmer.

Maybe i should set my targets higher then.

Madandra, I'm a bump and run man mate. unless I have something in my way i'll just bump it in. Even with a dodgy bounce the chances are you'll be closer to the pin more times than when trying the spectacular.

What kills me is on each 9 i'll have a nightmare hole. typified by when i played last week, started par, par, bogey, bogey then a 10! Does my head in.
