Got a surprise day off but the wife was taking the boy on a play date but wanted me to drive because she is still not so confident or has the stamina.
So I was looking for something to do and chanced upon a trackman place.
After some issues with the wireless connection I was left to my own devices..
Firstly, I enjoyed myself probably too much given the blister and sweat saturation 🤮.
What became apparent is I need a lesson.. I have an okay path, but the face control is too closed on wedges and possibly too open with longer clubs?
At the end I could cheat the system and land in the box by aiming to the left and letting the ball fade back into the centre.
I did think my hybrid was a bit inconsistent and I have the ability to spray it everywhere.. I don’t know if this is me or the club ( I will try a bit more before convincing myself I need a purchase 🤭) . I also worked out that with my clubs Ping G430s that if you add some shaft lean the face does close down ( so I will try my wedge again- 8 and 7 irons were fine) but I do feel I lose distance by not having shaft lean..
I wanted to ask how you know if the club path and face path are correct? Next time I will use a target from the beginning and make sure the radar is 90 degrees to my target .. does that make sense?

Not sure it’s clear what you are asking. In our local Trackman studio each time you set the ball it shows you a line from the ball(on screen) to the target. It moves around depending where you place your actual ball. So you set up square to that line /perpendicular to the screen and that’s your neutral axis.

This is interesting I don’t think I had that. Just looking at my photos .. was going to up load but some excuse about size came up.

Here is what I had: the ball and the line on the screen represent your target line. Click on the image to see it fully.

If you vew your photo on the phone and screenshot it, it’d be typically lower size that can then be posted.

Looks like you are already hitting it dead centre so that the target line is overlapped by your shot tracer 😎
Yes I figured out what I was doing wrong in my setup. It was useful because it showed the swing path was pretty tight, but the face was just closed. When I set up and lean the shaft, the face angle closes, by standing it up it improved. So the offset I think was doing me over. I did not feel distance was lost .. I am okay with these yardages ( but I wouldn’t say these are my numbers because the settings may be generic.. but they are in the region).
I definitely feel that this session had a positive impact on my understanding and I have more confidence.

But saying all that I struggled with the 5wood and 4hybrid on the simulator.. random distances and a tendency to spray .. but today at the range it was a different story. The 5 wood on course was well behaved, the 4 hybrid was okay but not brilliant…

As you have mentioned club path is good very neutral. Face is open to target hence the push right.

I was told that you want the Face/Club to be half of the value of each other to have the optimum shot shape.

-2 Club Path then 0 face etc
-2 club path for a perfect shot you would probably want a face angle of -1 (face to path of 1) for a slight fade. Having a face angle of 0 would mean you start it on line but since the face is 2 open to the path it will fade right. I typically have club path and face to path on show rather than face angle as it's much easier to interpret why the shot did what it did.

So next time I will put a tee in front of me and in line so I have an easy target
What I do is put a rubber tee down where I feel is square to where I'm hitting from and then when you go into the range or shot analysis mode there is a calibrate button before starting. Clicking this will bring up a horizontal and vertical yellow line and you move the horizontal one on top of the rubber tee and the vertical one in line with the bottom of the screen. That way Trackman knows exactly where you are aiming.

You need to do this before your session as you don't know where someone else has moved it to. One night I went into our swingroom and someone had the calibration point about 8 foot left for some reason, I've no idea what they were doing.

Just to show the way to achieve the target via nullification of face angle using path 🤭
