I suck from 130 yds and in....

At our level its all about getting up and down when we miss the green to save par. not making 1 putt birdies!

Add keeping 3 putts at bay too.

Ive been working a lot on short game recently. I find that my mind visualises approach shots, and when i overthink or do a load of practise swings its not so good. Trust your instincts as they say.

I find the Stricker pitching (sweeping style just a touch of wrist set) and toe down putting works very well.

If your getting slices from approach shots, may be a grip issue.

OP

Your best plan is to practise these shots a lot. Get onto the practise ground, put something like a towel on the ground at 130 yards and start working on a swing that gets you there with a tight dispersion.

I just get massively frustrated when I find myself with an 80-90 yard shot in... then end up with a 30ft putt. Drives me crazy!

I will try the club extra approach.... am hoping to head out on my lonesome on Thursday so will try some things out.

Off 17 if your approach shots are landing 30ft ( which is roughly 6 yards or 6 decent man size steps from the hole ) then i would be working on my lag putting..... 30ft isnt a long way from a hole....

If you are going after sucker flags that are only a few paces on at the edges of the green and your missing greens then you need to work on your chipoping.

Why are you 80 to 90 yards away?
Is this your preferred lay up distance or is it that your hitting your second as far as you can.

If any of the above were the case then id be looking at my course management...

Just reading through the replies and waiting to see the one I was going to make. ^^^ this one.

Get out there and practice from 30-100 with your wedges. You say you are pretty good at distance control but I still think dave pelz short game bible could be a good one to help devise your practice sessions. He explains the correct plane of a wedge swing, distance from ball, and position of ball in stance. All hugely useful in making a repeatable wedge swing. Most importantly he explains the difference between a power swing with a wedge and a true finesse wedge swing. Using this completely changed my short game and would recommend it to anyone.

I know it's been said before in thread but a wedge lesson is vital in my opinion. Like the op my miss is 150-100 yards but inside that I scramble above average for my hc.

I've found the best way to hone these shots is find a range with multiple targets inside 125 yards and have a competition with a playing partner or yourself to get closer, 3 shots then change target, or change club. I found this teaches you what you can and can't do with certain clubs, and the competitiveness keeps the motivation there.

I had a inconsistent year last year by along way, my hc stayed pretty stead which was down to the above, and the fact I rarely go for the same clubs at set distances, play the right shot, not the same shot

Coaches advice is also spot on.

From 130, anywhere on or around the green will do me just fine.

I'm confident enough in my short game that I could give myself a chance of getting the ball up-and-down from just off the green.

I'll start playing target golf from that range when my swing tightens up a little. For me, I'll play for the centre of the green, or away from any trouble.

Me and my brother in law play target practice against one another on the range... Closest of 3 shots wins the point and allows the winner to pick the next target.

It adds fun and focus to a session and really helps improvement.

Going back to your OP though... its fine to be center of the green provided its in regulation... A putt for birdie or a solid par!

Hi , a lot of good advise on here , for a 17 handicap you are expecting too much hence putting pressure on yourself , more club and a smooth swing is the way to go so practice that , one way of learning that is to play rounds of golf with a 1/2 set of clubs and have one rule , if the shot is in between clubs , always hit more club , swap the set round so you get even wear . takes time to get better control , its not an overnight thing

Er. Please explain the difference this proviso makes?!

The value of the centre of the green doesn't change whether for GIR or for a 9! The emphasis on Reward vs Risk might alter in certain situations, like Matchplay, but not simply GIR versus GIR+5 (say). It's exactly that sort of logic that turns a probable Bogey with possibility of Par into a Very likely Double possible Triple!

My thinking being that if I am next to the green I am going at the pin not the center of the green.
