how slow is too slow

If the group in front is slow then, at some point, you'll catch up with them. At that point politely ask if you can play through. If they decline then point out that they've lost a hole on the group in front.
Most people will let you through, some won't. It's still worth asking though.

I feel your pain, golf is about rhythm, and a progressive rhythm when walking around the course can keep your swing in check. We caught up to a comp on the 10th this weekend they was painfully slow and up until that point i was having a cracking round only 4 over par. The 10th came off with an 11 round over!

Totally agree, i would class that behaviour as snobbish or trying to prove a point and there is no need for it when you have paid your green fees, keeping their golf club in business!

As a visitor you should the same rights to play as the members. You stick in a letter of complaint. I would.

Not letting people through is in my opinion the worst cause of slow play. Everybody plays at different paces some play speed Golf where they are more interested how fast they got round and others who play like the pro's on the TV lining putts up from every angle and silly pre shot routines on every shot but if someone catches you up and it looks like you will hold them up then wave them through. I am not a fast player by any means but always wave through if someone is pushing

This slow play thing makes me very nervous, never played a course in my life and am just starting out at the driving range for a few weeks, I'll probably goto a course and just play the practice area (putting) a few times before I even attempt a proper go.

But what is worrying is what do the more advanced members think about the newbs who are struggling and are slow due to mentally bad shots? :/ I mean, I'd always let someone play through if they caught me as I'd probably have all day anyway, so could let any amounts through.

Also, when is it ok to tee off? If the group ahead are finished the hole you're teeing off on? If it's a longer (par 4 or 5) when they're on the putting phase you can tee off then take 2nd shot after they've finished putting? :s

For the benifit of readers, could those who post replies with a time for their round on a given day/scenario, please include the stated time provided by the club to complete the course, otherwise much of what's written can be taken out of context

Thanks

If it's a par 3, you wait on the tee until the group in front have completely cleared the green. This means that they've picked up their bags etc. and are heading off to the next tee. There's nothing to stop you teeing your ball up and selecting the right club while you are waiting though. This will save time in the long run as you are ready to go the minute the green is clear, rather than then having to faff around deciding which club you are going to use. Really annoys me that one. People in your group moaning about slow play and when it's their turn to tee off they still haven't decided which club they are going to hit, despite having waited 5 minutes for the green to clear!
On a par 4 or 5, you wait until they have all played their second shots, and again have picked up their bags etc. and are heading off up the fairway. Again, save time by having chosen your club while you have been waiting around!
On a par 5 you would then wait again for them move on after playing their second shots, unless you had hit a particularly big drive and were capable of reaching the green in two, in which case you would wait for them to clear the green again. Again, make your club selection while you are waiting.

It should always be common courtesy to let a group behind through if they catch you and you're holding them up. As a new player to the game, don't be too concerned about this, just remember to be considerate about others on the course and call a group through if they're travelling much quicker than you :)

Good advice but maybe worth caveating that with, Never let them through if:
  • The group is bigger than yours
  • They are older/younger than you (delete as required)
  • Any of them are wearing white trousers
  • They fire one off the tee while you're still in range or
  • They land one on the green when you're putting/exiting
  • Any of them have a Ping bag
  • Any of them tell you they are members
  • The starter let them off the 1st as soon as you were out of range
  • Any are wearing sunglasses on the back of their head & upside down
  • Any threaten to report you to the Sec
  • Any mention that those ankle socks really arn't acceptable
You have a duty to slow these people down! ;)

What others am I missing?
