Although I've been a member of our course coming up about 2 years now, with work travel, and having a daughter, the amount of time I spend at the course is limited.

What that means is that I don't play in many comps that are qualifying, so my handicap has stayed the same since I got it about a year ago.

Next year I've got a little wager on with a playing partner to see who can come down the most. £20 to the lowest reduction by the end of June, and a further £20 for the lowest by the end of 2010.

Back to me question. What that means is that I will probably be trying to play at least one medal per month, the problem is that you turn up and sometime don't go out until 12-ish, whereas my wife is used to me going out as soon as possible in the mornning, and then staying out for around 4 hours, so this is going to come as a bit of a shock to her that I may need to be out of the house for longer.

Typically, how long are you guys out of the house when playing a round of golf?

Obviously my wife is used to 4 hours, but that may end up being 5 or 6 when playing in the medals.

:)

Bob, sorry, didn't explain. We have a regular group of guys on a Saturday who play in a comp called the Stags. You turn up around 10, stick your name down, and then get drawn out and given a tee time. Sometimes that tee time could be around 12, so you effectively have to wait around for an hour or two.

I suppose I could always nip home as I live only 4 minutes from our 4th tee.

Oh, then the two or so hours in the bar watching the football scores come in. ;)

Too long! Four balls typically 4 hours, although we do have some tees and greens close together, so you have to wait even if players ahead are out of range.

oic
I live 20 mins from the course so there's 40 mins round trip
Plus 9 holes (too old for 18) Hour and a half
2 pints half an hour
home
Time away...2 hrs 40 mins
No problem with HID as she she plays too. :)

My OH isn't too keen on me being out too long as we have 2 kids under 3, but she's fairly understanding as long as I get the earliest tee time I can and come home straight after. The course is about 30 minutes drive each way, so if were teeing off at 11 i'll leave at 10, then 3-4 hours or so to get round. Im usually back by 4.
Dont know if she's prepared for the summer though when i'll be playing comps and 36+ holes in a day, and playing after work.

I try to get an early tee time, anything between 8 to 8:30 so I'm always finished before 12. Pint in the bar, and a bacon bap, and I'm home for 1 o'clock.

I'm in the same boat; wife, young child...

luckily, i have the single most understanding wife in the country!

At my current course, it's a 45 min drive each way, plus up to 4 hours for a round on medal day, plus a drink afterwards. I can be gone for over 6 hours easy.

Just joined a new course which is 2 minutes up the road and which means i'll get to spend a lot more time at home and play just as much golf... really really looking forward to it.

FWIW, if i, or my wife, felt that i wasn't spending enough time with the wee one, i wouldn't even hesitate in cancelling the golf and staying at home or going and doing something with the family instead.

I tend to play early afternoon. I found that to be best when my family were young.

Leave around 1pm back around 6.30pm. Travel is 20 mins each way in the car, a comp round can take 3:00-3:15, rest of time is in the clubhouse.

My wife plays as well, so it's not a problem really.

Depends really, if something is planned with family or just want to spend some time together then it'll be about 4.5 hours including return trip.

If I'm not needed then I'll spend most of the day up at the club, bit of chipping, few holes, bit of banter (and gossip!!) in the Pro shop, spot of lunch and 18 holes followed by a couple of pints. Home in time to read my littleun's bed time story.

On non-competition days we have a group of a dozen or so with tee times booked from just after 8am. We play as 3 or 4-balls and if I wait for the last group to come in and have a natter I'm generally still home for 1.30pm.

For comps we put our names down into time slots and the tee times are then drawn. I always go for the early slot so am generally off by 9 - with a 4 hour round and a pint after I'm still home by 2.

If for any reason I cannot get an early time I don't bother because the later we start at our place, the longer the round tends to be. Our course marshall is just too nice to give people a flea in their ear if they are too slow!

Door to door, for a comp' - got to be 5-6 hours. That's quite a long time, thinking about it.

If I go for a bounce game, it's probably under 5.

The Saturday morning comp at our place is a roll up, so you can't stick your name down for a tee time, otherwise I would always go for a early tee time.

Same for bounce games, out at first light.

Just need to start playing in some of these medals to try and get my handicap down and with the cash, but also need to be able to justify it to the missus!! :)

we normally tee off around 12.30 ,so leave the house about 11.30 and then the golf, drink and a meal home about 6 but tell her home around 7,so she thinks am home early

During the medal comps I try and arrive at the course by 7.15, 5 minute drive from the house. The comps are turn up and play depending on your time of arrival. The first tee off is when the pro arrives, should be 7.30. Not unusual for 20+ guys hanging around by 7.30 !! Usually get away around 8 and be back for 11.30 so if I have a snack I am usually home for 12.30. This gives us,( the wife and 10 year old daughter) time to do stuff together. Course tends to flow quite well and members are very quick to put down a provisional ball.
