There seem to be a lot of players who work on the principle that as everyone else marks their ball, they don't need to as it will be unique.

works well for me....hit a problem once in 9 years. I will take those odds

Nothing to do with cheating, if there's 2 identical balls lying next to each other with no individual identifiable markings you can't claim definitely which ball is yours.
You're required to go back and play from where the last shot was played [ stroke and distance ] .

No, just ensured that your balls were marked in a fairly distinctive way, not just a dot next to the number.

My current balls are pre marked either Fragger or PhilTheFragger courtesy of my daughters at Xmas

Failing that I either mark the balls with a PM or sometimes with the symbol of Kronos which is also used by Blue Oyster Cult

My missus thought I’d been assigned a pattern by the club. I like the idea that we’d all be assigned a unique pattern.

I got my idea from the old "No Fear" logo. Works a treat on Callaway balls and I've not seen anyone else with the same design yet.

And also works pretty well on M some Mizunos I bought

I put my initial above the Titleist logo on both sides.

I don't tell anyone what markings are on my ball until they tell me what they have found in the rough when looking for mine
