Bunker shots, how do you play yours and what do you use?

one of my reg playing partners is a fantastic bunker player and never fails to get out or end up too far away from the pin. But only just noticed he didn't use a conventional sand wedge as such. 60 deg with no bounce.

At Nairn we have quite deep pot bunkers with soft ish sand, so i would have said some bounce was needed.

But everyone is different and play the shots different as well

Ive stuck with 56 with 10 deg and open the club up still, ball forward and sweep under the ball.

So what are you using and how?

Depends if I'm honest.

Some of our greenside bunkers are quite shallow so easy to lift the ball out of. Some are proper pits.

A lot will also depend on the lie. Usually use my 58° unless plugged.

I do however play most (Unless plugged) lies similar and flatten my swing a little and make sure I hit the sand first.

I'll usually make a full(...ish) swing and stay committed so as not to slow down into the ball or as the club exits the sand.

9 out of 10 times I'll get out in one and be on the green

56 degree (don't know bounce)

Default for me is to square the face & square the stance and a full swing (too many higher handicap golfers try an open stance/clubface and botch it)

Love the challenge of a good deep pot bunker

56* with 14* of bounce, played forward in the stance. That's assuming its a greenside bunker and its decent sand. If short sided the club face is opened up further and hit harder, hoping for more spin.

Fairway bunkers, depending on the height of the lip and distance from the green, I'll take anything up to and including a 3 wood.

Green side bunkers I use both my 60 & 50 depending on wether I need to get it up quickly or not. I go with the usual slightly open stance and I just lay the club open and maintain my wrists open through the swing.

Ah! The old Black Widow! Worked well for a mate from damp bunkers - and forced him to commit rather than his normal poke!

I know someone who is very successful with another low bounce wedge, but it has a very wide sole.

It's all a case of finding what works best for your own style - or adjusting the style to the particular conditions.

Using a 60 deg lob wedge, setting up square and driving the leading edge into the sand just behind the ball is an effective way to get out of a greenside bunker. It creates a nice high flight that stops up quick.

Been practising a strong left hand grip, very weak right and an early hinge after watching that Luis oosthouszen video that was posted on here recently.

Works well. 60-11 56-12 doesn't really matter.

The Stan Utley method works for me. 58/10, set up square, wide stance with knees really bent until your bum is almost touching the sand. Hands very low, just swing and aim for the ball. The club just glides under the ball and it pops out. Good shot from thick rough too, especially if you need to get the ball up quickly.

58* wedge normally. Bunkers really arent the strongest part of my game...probably because I am used to having a flat swing so always struggled with a consistent approach. I am getting better, but I struggle for the commitment to the shot at times, and so normally get it out, but nowhere near the pin. I should commit and swing a little harder to try and get the ball closer

60*. Ball forward, open stance & steep angle of attack.
i found If I get too flat or too shallow with the AOA the ball comes out hot & too low.

With a sand wedge and badly is the answer to the original question :o

Ditto. Bunker shots are comfortably the worst part of my game. I either thin the shot or take too much sand! Once in a while i play a cracker and think i've nailed it but then it returns to rubbish!

No comment .

58/8 and forward. Usually works well although can be inconsistent some days ( but that's down to me).

9 times out of 10 it is a clean strike on the ball for me, watching the ball soar 40/50 yards past the intended landing spot. :o

Have tried to imagine the bank note under the ball and the imaginary line in front, but I struggle with the concept of swinging the club to miss the ball, which is strange as sometimes on the fairway when I swing to strike the ball I hit the turf inches in front of it

stupid game

I use a vokey 60 4deg bounce stance slightly open club face open and ball forward.ball comes out high and soft.can get up and down from most bunkers And if I'm going to miss the green Id rather be in the bunker than chipping.
