I've played a few rounds at my new club, west lothian, since all the bad weather. the latest was a couple of nights ago. The greens, although drying out and getting quicker all the time, are in a terrible state from the frost/snow damage that occurred over winter. They are probably the messiest, most bumpy greens i've played on! It's a big shame, as the greens were beautiful last year when i played the course once or twice.

How are your clubs greens holding up?

Not bad - they had a bit of disease over the winter but are recovering and getting quick!!
Not as true as they could be but they are all closed this week for maintainence so should be getting better all the time. Fortunately its coincided with my sore ribs (Easter Sunday trip!) so I'm not missing much golf.

Just had a look at the website for your club

"Our membership pride themselves on the quality of the greens and fairways which are kept well manicured and maintained. "

:D

It's basically the same at Prestonfield, very dry, fast and lumpy. Frustrating as you can get the ball bobbling off line quite easily.

Very difficult to make a comparison. My course has been snow free for over six weeks, however other couses, some in the Lothians, were coverd in over 6" of snow only a couple of weeks ago. A few weeks and things will a lot better, after all it is still April!

Glad to hear we are not the only club. Our greens are in a terrible state with the ball bobbling all over the place. Can onle hope in the next month or so there is a good grow otherwise they will be like that for the rest of the year!

Our's are pretty good considering what winter we have had (still having!!)

We are quite elevated where we are so we are always a few weeks behind most places as we wait for the soil temperature to wake up.

All is looking good for another great green season at ours. They are a bit sandy, after the hollow tine and top dressing about two weeks ago, coupled with the fact we have had no rain to wash it in and the fact that the grass has only just started to grow means they are not upto last seasons standard yet, they are in good nick and roll true.

Ours are diabolical. They were hollow tined about 3 weeks ago and are still a mess. It's like putting on corrugated iron, I hit a 30 foot putt yesterday and it bounced up off the surface every 3 or 4 feet. No consistency in the pace, some you have to whack it, others just steady. If I'm playing on my own I don't even bother putting

Ours were looking good until they were hollowtined last week but expect them to recover as they usually do. They have been excellent for the last 5 years and don't expect any different this year. Considering it's a public course and gets a lot of traffic, the green keepers do a magnificent job.

West Cornwall greens were hollow tined about a month ago, plenty of rain to sort it out after that. New roller bought in 2 weeks ago, and been bone dry since. The greens are green, true and very very fast for this time of year.

Really enjoying putting on them at the moment, except downhill with a backwind....

Our were hollow tined a week ago so they are what you expect at this time of year, but will soon recover and be as good as ever.

sounds like there's a few clubs out there in the same situation...

really can't wait for the greens to return to what they should be as they have a very good reputation. I'm keen to invite a couple of folk along for a game, but i wouldn't even think of it with the greens the way they are at the moment.

Not bad. They have improved immeasurably in just two weeks.

The grass is growing around here (hooray!!!) and if my mower has been out of the shed, the greens at the course will start to look beautiful.
They'll never be as good as the other club in my town, but they are not so old and as we don't use temps over the winter they do take some time to recover.

Does anyone know how "old" a green needs to be or can you get one up to good quality in a short time?

It's our fairways that need attention the most....if my garden was that patchy, I'd be out with the grass seed.

Our greens are very poor at the moment fast and bumpy. I am quite sure they will come but 2 - 3 foot putts are a nightmare. I went to watch a bit of the Scottish Boys at West Kilbride last week and their greens and general tideness of the course was 1st class.

Our greens are horrendous we havnt had a good putting surface for 6 mths. Our green staff in my oppinion have got it wrong, when it was soft over the winter they were cutting it with a half ton mower leaving big grooves in the greens until i told him he was a knob, they sliced them just before a week of dry weather leaving the grooves to get wider, theve just holed and seeded them when weve had a week of dry weather and they are now bumpy and so untrue,im no expert so i dont know the answer but surely there must be a better way.

Ours were tined a month and a bit ago and are now getting quite good, virtually no bobbles last week and getting quicker. Back sticks medal tomorrow, first qualifier of the year and looking forward to it.

Bumpy would be the best word to describe them.

I was hearing there has been a mix up with the green-keeping equipment. The old stuff came off hire and back to the supplier before the new stuff arrived so they have been working with limited tools.

not going to help things
