Had a monthly stableford yesterday and nobody played to their handicap or under their handicap, there was 11 players entered and becuase 6 of those played within their buffer zone the CSS went down by 1. This means that all the category 1 players had a handicap increase even tho they played in their buffer zone. I think this is totally wrong when nobody even plays to their handicap let alone under their handicap that the CSS can go down.

Those who got in the buffer are effectively considered to have played to their handicap for handicapping purposes. If you based h'cap calculations purely on the number of people who played exactly to or beat their handicap, CSS would end up going up nearly every week.

EDIT: More than this, I would imagine Reductions only would be a far more common occurrence.

Half the field hit their buffer zone, and with very low fields you can get some more interesting CSS calculations like that.

I would think there are just as many situations where the low handicappers have benefitted greatly from the CSS going up !

some you win some you lose, but with over half the field in buffer it is quite understandable for CSS to go down.
i would suggest there are not many days when over half the field buffers?

but the calculation is done on the percentage shooting inside buffer or better, but doesnt consider if nobody shoots better than there handicap, so in theory the course must have been playing hard that day and that what i thought the CSS was about !!

the higher handicappers gain just as much as the cat 1 handicappers when CSS goes up.

as has already been explained you are looking at it, and quoting it, the wrong way.

over 50% of the field played to their buffer or better - therefore the course was playing easier than the SSS.

Wrong!!

You don't get it, do you?

If you are Cat1 and you buffer, you have played within 1 shot of your handicap. By any measure, that is very good golf, and if all the Cat1s buffer then that suggests that they are all finding conditions are such that they are all very close to playing to or playing better than handicap. For any category, playing to buffer is a true measure of playing to your handicap level. You can play to your handicap level without actually hitting the nail on the head.

Obviously I don't get it !!!!!
Half of the cat 1 players played to their buffer but none to their actual handicap so I would expect the CSS not to change as nobody in any of the category's played to their actual handicap.

I think you just need to read the responses again, it has already been explained
