A few months ago GM run a survey on whether you would prefer to be a good putter or driver, we only saw the result which the majority was in favour of wanting to be a great putter, however all we saw was a result & no reasons for peoples votes.
Pesonally i strive to be a better driver than a putter as you can't beat that feeling of smoking one right down the middle & the noise it makes when you hit the sweet spot, this consequently makes your job reaching the green a whole lot easier which then takes the pressure off your putting & makes for a more relaxing, enjoyable round.

What is your preference & why?

I must admit, putting the ball in good places off the Tee certainly makes the rest of the hole fall into place easier, so its a tough one.

I'm not a bad putter, so right now, I'd like to be a better Driver

With a good drive you're hopefully putting for par or better.

With a bad drive, if you're lucky, you'll be putting for a point.

Being a great putter is important once you can be sure to get the vast majority of your drives in decent position.

But until then, it's virtually impossible to play to any kind of score without being a good player off the tee.

For me, where I am at the moment, I say driver.

Human nature is such that people always crave the skills that they haven't got, and the ones they do have seem unimportant to them.

Following that theory, I'd much prefer to be a better putter than driver.

Seems that the lower your handicap goes the better putter you would rather be cos you've already got a good game. The higher you are then all you want to do is keep that bloomin ball in play ;)

I'd prefer the compromise of good putter and good driver, great at one or the other inevitably leads to average scores.

Well, I've got to vote putter. My driving and Lefties putting (30 a round) and I'd play off single figures blindfolded.

:)

It's got to be 'putter' for me as well.

I often play a bad tee shot, but I can often recover and still score a point or two. But only if I'm putting well.

A good drive is just that. A great way to start a hole. But it's how you finish it that matters.

You can't beat a great tee shot for that satisfying glow. However it's soon forgotton at the green if you 3 putt.

Ideally. I'd want to be great at both. But that isn't an option here.

Great Driver, poor putter=Sergio Garcia==no majors.
Poor Driver, great putter=Tiger Woods===14 Majors.

Maybe a bit harsh on Sergio but as Rafa said---FACTS.

So great putter and a reasonable driver for me.

As I'm driving so appallingly at the moment and putting reasonably well and still scoring I guess being a better putter is helping me.

Personally i would like to be a better putter as i can drive the ball quite long and straightish but my putting sometimes lets me down. I also would like to be a little more straighter off the tee but putting would be my number one option.

Reasons ...
You Putt on average more than twice as often as you drive.

The chances of lost shots when putting are far less than driving.

There are effective options to Driving that offer distance and accuracy without shot loss, there are very very few effective options to using a putter.

A good days putting can save shots and often make up shots on every hole, but a good days driving only offers you a decent lie and X-yds in distance on only 15 or 16 holes, in most cases it does not save shots off the tee, nor make up shots elsewhere in the same way putting can, or aproach shots can, or chip shots can.

On most holes using a driver, what you do after the drive often determines shot losses or gains, all you get with the driver is 1 stroke off the tee at best, at worst OOB, you still have to play a second (or more)and you still have to putt.

One good drive is one shot, its expected, the only other thing it can give you is LOST SHOTS and sometimes a few if OOB more than once, a putter should never lose you so many shots.

With a poor drive you can still make birdie or par, with poor putting you lose chances and strokes.

So choice between putting and driving???

PUTTING any day of the week. ;)
