If itâs raining when Iâm already out on the course no problem. It itâs a comp round agin no drama I quite enjoy that, but a social round with the wife who has no waterproofs then sod thatGet the brolly up, you soft sod![]()
Yes but not by you.Jesus Christ, some patronising sods on here sometimes.
Regardless of where I fill in the card, it still needs filling in, even if I didnât Iâd still need to know how many shots I get before I start the round when playing in a stableford. So yes, we can all do our research whilst sat on the bog at home, or in bed the night before, but the fact remains that the calculation still needs to be done.

Appreciate that but does anyone go into a stableford comp not knowing what shots they get? I donât know anyone else who goes in blind, holing out for no points, or âIâve got this putt for a pointâ.I think you are missing the points raised. A players handicap does not have to be on the card, a player is only responsible for their gross score on the card it is the committees responsibility to work out the stableford points.
When you say you need to know how many shots for stableford it is for your own benefit - get it wrong and it does not matter for a comp result.
No they donât as the Committee have to provide that information for you.Appreciate that but does anyone go into a stableford comp not knowing what shots they get? I donât know anyone else who goes in blind, holing out for no points, or âIâve got this putt for a pointâ.
Anyway, I think this has been done to death, weâre ok to have different opinions and different methods.
Depends.Yes but not by you.
You do realise that this ânew systemâ will, in a lot of instances, probably mean that higher handicappers will actually receive more shots in competitions than they do currently? All This talk about trying to calculate oneâs handicap is making me chuckle.
Why?
Coz am sat here perusing the net and Ave just read that Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have now adopted a new WHS handicapping system after a trial In which clubs were allowed to alter a persons handicap.
However England golf have decided against doing that.
Why? Quote.
They told counties: âAfter careful consideration and consultation, including feedback from counties, committees, club staff and volunteers, we have decided to postpone any adoption of changes to Playing Handicap Allowances until 2028, in line with the wider WHS review cycle.
Now hereâs a thought. Why not actually ask golfers like they did in the original trial in Ireland.
Quote.
They concluded the trial had seen âbroadly positive impactsâ. They revealed there was a âstrong sentiment among both golf club administrators and golfers themselves that handicapping currently favours higher-handicapped playersâ.
Now donât get me wrong. My thoughts on the WHS are well known and for those that donât know. Itâs rammel.
Obviously England golf donât read the GM Forum. Otherwise they would
Know the split on WHS is only matched by the split in America with the republicans and Democrats.
We have had it hammered down our throats about how brilliant WHS Is and yet now even Countries cannot agree how to run the WHS.
itâs a complete and utter mess.
Good luck guys in sorting out your handicaps
Happy Easter everyone.
I will Be honest I am Not sure of the ramifications. And as you say amYou do realise that this ânew systemâ will, in a lot of instances, probably mean that higher handicappers will actually receive more shots in competitions than they do currently?
Have to say that I played a 'welcome' round today - myself and a lady member welcoming a married couple new to the club. The 'newbies' put in cards; us 'oldies' didn't bother. I scored him - but as this was just a score for handicap purposes I knew that his stableford points were an irrelevance for that - I just checked that he holed out and I recorded his gross score on every hole. As it happens he was careless on just one putt - tapping in back of club from a foot - it went in for a 7 - so obviously he knew he'd score zero points hole it or not. At end I just signed his gross score - and that was all that was on the card. I'm not even very sure what his handicap was - it was on the card but I took no notice of it.Appreciate that but does anyone go into a stableford comp not knowing what shots they get? I donât know anyone else who goes in blind, holing out for no points, or âIâve got this putt for a pointâ.
