Golf Random Irritations

Irritated by articles reporting that so & so ‘predicts’ xyz player will win the Masters (or any other sporting event)

These aren’t predictions. At best it’s just a guess but often its just who they hope will win

The one that annoys me is " can "X" win The Masters"...
Is he teeing it up on the Thursday?
Yes?
Then he can..anyone teeing it up can....
Will they?
Well, let's have a look on Sunday night shall we...

Irritation as it relates to the handicap system… but a question as I thought I had a grip on it, and clearly I’m missing some info.

Scenario: These 2 players, off 3.1 and 3.4, are playing in a Stableford, from the navy tees.

How many shots does each player receive?

They get whatever the computer says they get.

I’m not sure what’s the issue ? Their course HC is 5 so the shots they get will be dependent on the format and HC allowances so for a Stableford it will be 5 🤷‍♂️

No, their course handicap isn’t exactly 5 it is a number to a lot of decimal places, which I can’t be bothered to work out (this is why competitions are run via ISVs). The handicap allowance, if it is singles Stableford, will be 95% of this number.
All of this will be calculated by the computer, hence they get whatever the computer gives them.

I think this is why, it’s like 4.729 which goes to 4.49 from 95%.

Holed a 9 footer on the 18th for a 1 under par gross 69 this evening.

"Why is this an irritation?" I can hear you all ask with dumbfounded expressions across your faces?

I thought it was for a 68!!!

Best round in well over 15 years...have a 67 and two other 69's on my "record" (hence my annoyance that I didn't get a 68 to fill the gap :ROFLMAO: ) from a long time ago on our yellow tees...yes it was a casual practice round so no competitive pressure but, who cares...its still decent golf, something that I know deep down I'm capable of getting close to more regularly than pratting about shooting high 70's/low 80's.

Tale of the tape...

11/13 Fairways hit
13/18 Greens in Reg
30 putts
1.69 putts/GIR
1.6 putts/non GIR
77 feet total putts holed
5 birdies, 4 bogeys, 9 pars
44 Stableford points if that's how you like to calculate things (I get 7 shots)

I've had something similar before - I think when they do the 95% for the comp handicap it does the whole calculation at once - rather than just being 95% of the course hcp. Hence your 3.1 probably loses one and the 3.4 doesn't?

I posted one a while ago where we were giving a shot to our opponents in a foursomes match even though their combined handicap index was actually lower than ours. 😂

During my early Saturday morning 9 holes this weekend I used my 58° LW to plant an approach to 3 feet...club goes back in the bag as usual...
Get the bag out of the car on Sunday to play the Medal and there's a space where the LW should be.
No sign anywhere in the car, clubs hadn't been anywhere else....so I must have used it again, maybe had to take a wedge and a putter to a green or similar...
Borrowed a wedge from the shop, nothing handed in at that time and off I went.
Returned the wedge this morning, still nothing handed in..
And they told me that, apparently, 2 or 3 Vokeys have been "lost" in the last month and none have been handed in.........
Disappointing..........

I’d look closely into your playing partner’s bags. If you’ve hit to 3 feet, they’ve a vested interest in removing it.

As @pokerjoke and @upsidedown can testify, Rick Garg helped himself to my wedge at Hillside several years ago under similar circumstances. A fantastic day in great company brightened further by Rick’s usual colourful explosion, bright pants, multicoloured sweater & sharp wit.

That’s not quite the same issue although the confusion is the same.
In strokeplay you use unrounded Course Handicap, hence it is best to leave the computer to do its stuff.
In matchplay you use rounded CH, so it is relatively easy to do the maths yourself. I assume the issue here was the of the rounding up and down of the four different CH numbers.

Not the same issue, just another example of how it can be a minefield to figure out yourself. Unfortunately I have the kind of brain that is desperate to understand everything, rather than just accept it, but in the case of handicap calculation, as you say, I sometimes just have to let it go and see what the computer says. 😄

I always use this to calculate my playing handicap. Not sure if we’re talking about the same thing, but in the past I’ve done my own calculation, gone to enter my scores after the round and the computer is giving me an extra shot. So I just use this now. It gives you your PH depending on the comp format, 95% etc.

For my home club, IG app tells me what my playing handicap is anyway. For any away round I'm just using course handicap so I use MyEG app to tell me that.
