We had a bit of a discussion today after our round over a cuppa in the club house about forgiving clubs.....
A question was asked of me by a low single digit handicapper about the forgivness of clubs...

What he asked me was " If we search for forgiveness in our clubs and either get fitted or educate ourselves on club reviews before we buy them then why is it that we all want the most forgiving driver or woods or hybrids yet when it comes to our irons this thought process goes out the window...

I tried to answer him honestly but i just couldnt... :D

perhaps there should be a confessional box next to the Starter's hut for all this forgiveness you want :o
being a Methodist I just take it on the chin and try harder next time ;)

Personally I don't.

I guess one way of looking at it would be that most club golfers struggle with a driver more than any other club in the bag. This is mainly down to the lenght of the shaft.

Instead of cutting the shaft down or working on choking down with a driver people want to hit it as far as possible (within reasonable control) so the heads have to be super forgiving, alot of them weighted and/or toed in to fight the common banana slice and turn it into a straight shot or a 'fade'.

I not sure that we don't and that unless you are buying blades or some of these TP type cavity backs most middle of the range (G15, MP53, Burner, etc) offer a lot of forgiveness these days. If you want to be helped as much as possible then the super GI clubs (K15 etc) will give you as much help as allowed but regardless of the level of forgiveness if you swing the club so poorly it won't make any difference.

Depends, i think, what you are used to.

I started out with blades as a kid, then got my grandads blades when i was older so a wide soled, thick topped iron just looks and feels alien to me and i'm uncomfortable from the off.

A thinner topped iron just seems to make me feel more comfortable.

GI irons are generally ugly

So what your saying SB is that even though they probably would help our game then the only reason that we dont play them is the astethics....

Surely this is a personal choice but is it biting into the Ego side of the argument then?

Most drivers look similar, just some have smaller heads/shaft tech etc.

GI irons and blades look VASTLY different.

Agreed SB....
But what made you choose your G15 over the i15 driver?

I am a bit different in this aspect as when I bought my Nike TW Blades I got them as I felt they could help me move my shots about. I would rather think what a club can do for you rather than what it protects you against. Its like a cricket bat I wouldnt buy one that said if you have this bat you wont hit one far enough to get caught. I would rather one that helped me score maximums.

Couldnt afford the I15 and the G15 looked pretty sweet and was very forgiving. The stock shaft was wrong for my swing so got custom fitted to increase accuracy.

TBH any driver would have been half decent with a good shaft for me.

Irons I got as my old ugly GI irons were holding me back and I needed something that would give me more spin and had better shafts.

Because (and I speak for only myself) I dont really like the look of big chunky irons whether they will help me or not and most drivers look the same with the exception of the white elephant! :D
